Here is an e-mail originated by Moveon.org a liberal friend of mine sent me. I couldn't resisit sending back a response. :chuckle:

Hi there!
I don't feel this is a Democratic or Republican issue so read on!!!

I'm writing because of an urgent threat to many of the things we care about. Republican leaders are about to change Senate rules so that they can stack the Supreme Court with right-wing judges. The impact would be so huge that even Republicans are calling this plan the "nuclear option." But if we flood the Senate with phone calls, we can stop them. Will you call our Senators?

Please take a moment to call Senators Frist and Alexander. ( or whomever is in your state)You don't need to be an expert to call. Just tell whoever answers (or say this in a message): "Hello. I live in ______, and I would like to urge Senator _________ to oppose the 'nuclear option' and support requiring judicial nominees to have broad support in the Senate. Thank you very much." It's easy, quick, and really, really important.

I'm doing this as part of a new MoveOn campaign called Operation Democracy. My local MoveOn team is trying hard to track our impact--can you please take a second to tell us you called by clicking here?

http://www.moveonpac.org/team/callin/call_in.html?r_id=:5614541-iPbupKLydPJCr5squDF8JQ&team_id=502

Centuries old Senate rules require federal judges to win broad support--this leads to fair, non-partisan courts. But Republicans are preparing to use a parliamentary trick called the "nuclear option" to force through every one of Bush's right-wing nominees.

The nuclear option would eliminate the right to "filibuster" judges. This is basically a rule that has always allowed both parties to stop the most extreme nominees. If Republicans succeed, George Bush will be able to nominate up to four Supreme Court justices who will roll back years of progress on women's rights, labor rights, civil liberties, the environment, etc. It's scary enough that I'm asking people I know to help stop it. We're trying to get tons of calls in today. Please call right now.

Thank you very much for helping me save the Supreme Court and protect democracy!

Here is my response:

The dems don't have a Constitutional leg to stand on. The Constitution does not provide for the Senate to filibuster Judicial nominees. The Republicans are the majority holders in the Senate and therefor have the Constitutional right to set Senate procedures, including a simple majority vote which will surely result in the appointment of the Presidents nominee.

How can anyone think that the minority demanding it gets it's way through thuggery is democratic????? That's ridiculous! I hope Frist rams this down the dems throats and we get an extremely Conservative, young Judge who will serve in the Supreme Court for 30 years! That's Democracy in action, Baby!

By the way, the Supreme Court currently consists of 5 Conservatives and 4 Liberals. Rehnquist, the Judge likely to step down, is a Conservative. Bush appointing a Conservative would simply maintain the current balance of the Supreme court, contrary to whoever wrote this original e-mail claiming that Bush is stacking the courts.

If anyone would like to join me in spirited debate, I post regularly at http://www.theologyonline.com/index.php You'll find me in the Politics and Current Events threads.

From the email:

Centuries old Senate rules require federal judges to win broad support--this leads to fair, non-partisan courts.

That is a flat out lie. Obviously, the people Moveon.org are targeting are expected to react emotionally and disregard the facts.

What are you going to say to them?

I'm sure they are quite aware that what the Republicnas are doing is entirely legal.

What is unethical about requiring an up and down vote? I thought you libs had an affinity for democracy?

I guess only when it favors your liberal agenda. Need I remind you that dems are the MINORITY party?
