I could care less about most TV, but there are a few things that I like to watch. Sports and highlights, Lost, Simpsons, and Family Guy

I think TV's should come with handles on the side, they are really heavy and hard to move every Christmas when it's time to make room for the Christmas tree.

I voted "TV is good." I really don't think about it too much, but without it I'd be out of touch with the world and not enjoying my relaxation time as much. I'm just not a good reader, but if I was I'd probably read books more in my free time. There is a lot of garbage on TV that I care not to see, so I just don't watch it. The only stuff I really go out of my way to watch are Smallville and Star Trek. I usually watch movies, either on TV or movies I own or get from the Blockbuster club. I'll watch old sitcoms, and Seinfeld reruns, but most of the current shows are crap. CSI is pretty cool too....CSI Miami is by far the best because I like David Caruso in that. I really like the SCI FI channel, but the moron cable system in Tucson doesn't have it. Bunch of punks.
I wonder if I would watch Bob Enyart. I wonder if that show is one I woujld watch out of negative interest, like Jerry Springer. ;)
I like the History channel. Very interesting stuff.

I voted the "could do without it but watch it sometimes", however I would qualify that abit. For one I NEVER watch anything on a network other than occaisinal sporting events. The networks are utter trash and filth. I think kids need to get the heck away from the TV, it's a blight on our young generation. Our kids do watch some Nick/Disney channell (really the only thing ever on our tv other than sports), but they are outside playing their buts off almost all day long. Parents, make your kids put down the remotes allready.

There is also football........But the main thing I watch is News, Discovery Channel stuff and Movies. HBO has some cool shows like Deadwood and The Sopranos.

American Chopper
I was a latecomer to 'American Chopper', but I watch it whenever it's on now. If this is the future of reality TV, I'm there!! 'American Hot Rod' is similarly cool.
There is a new show called 'Deadliest Catch' that I actually make a point of watching every Tuesday.

There are only a couple of shows I make a point of watching, and I'm sure I could live without them. I used to like documentaries and information shows, but I don't have cable and even PBS has fallen into the more commercial nonsense, lately. TV could be a fantastic cultural tool, but unfortunately American culture is only about greed, and so everythng on TV is about making money, instead of adding cultural value to our lives.

PureX
April 30th, 2005, 09:29 PM
They won't run cable into this area because there's no one living here to buy it from them. And there's a taller building immediately to the south of me, so I'd have to mount the dish up on the side of an ols water tower srtucture, and run the cable down an elevator shaft. It can be done, but is it really worth all that? So far, I've decided that it's not. $45 a month is kind of high for a few sort of interesting programs.

I don't have cable at home but it's on a lot at work. We do have that Blockbuster mail order membership and can have 3 movies at a time for as long as we wish to keep them. It costs less than cable and it's a great way to watch a series from the begining and I don't have to program my VCR.

TV is still decent although it is definitely full of trash & worthless programming.
The older I get, the less TV I seem to watch but I'll always love watching sports. (NBA playoffs & NASCAR currently)
I watch Fox news & check out Discovery, Animal Planet, & Food Network on occasion.
My favorite show is CSI. (the original & Miami, don't care for NY) I think it's my favorite because it's about searching for the truth.

Jusr as an aside..we love the BBC version we get here in Oz. ;)
Anyway...I don't mind TV but I could really do wothout it and the 'drawing' power [ actually 'sucking in' power to be more precise] that it has. I tend to put it on to watch a specific program, and just sit, and sit, and sit...you get the picture :)...but sometimes I'm not even really watching it!
I have bouts of trying to not put it on, but they usually only last a week or so...then it's on again.

The good sitcoms ended with Seinfeld. Andy Griffeth is great, All in the Family is great stuff, Happy Days is good, and most in the 80s although there was the beginning of a decline.... Old school Cosby show was great, Different World, Who's the Boss, Head of the Class, Perfect Strangers....all good shows. But now everything's about gay people. Nearly every single show forces me to watch plots dealing with homosexuality or some other kind of sex overload and I don't go for that.

I watch House too! I think Hugh Laurie is just plain cool. I never even knew he had such a strong British accent until I saw him on a talk show recently. It must really take a lot of effort to mask the accent so well.
I actually love TV. We all go to bed early, but since I'm not really a big sleeper, I lay in bed and read and watch TV at night. It's relaxing, and if there's nothing on I just read until something starts.
On Mondays I usually watch The Bachelor (even though everyone makes fun of me for it) at 9, and sometimes Medium at 10, but I've been going to sleep earlier since the end of my pregnancy.
Tuesdays I watch American Idol at 8, and I usually read while I'm watching it. Then I watch House at 9, and Law and Order Special Victims Unit at 10.
Wed. I watch Americas Next Top Model at 8, but only when Lost is a repeat, which it has been alot lately.
Thursdays I watch Survivor at 8, and then sometimes CSI at 9, and sometimes ER at 10, but I usually read after survivor....CSI and ER have really sucked lately.
Friday and Saturday nights I usually watch a movie with the girls and then just read myself to sleep.
Sundays my husband and I watch The Contender, which I love! And then I usually watch Law and Order Criminal Intent, and then Crossing Jordan.

I like T.V. There are quality shows out therre...and there are shows that are a lesser quality and still entertaining.
Additionally, if you want to communicate with other people it's good to know what they're watching and have similar cultural touchstones. This is something CleverDan and I have discussed because as a pastor he will have to be able to communnicate with a wide spectrum of congregants. Even if you don't watch/listen to everything out there, it's good to have an accurate knowledge of what is popular.
For example, when I was teaching junior high school students, I was able to refer to 50 Cents in the proper context. I never listen to him, but I knew the kids did. Andit made the example I was using more relatable for them.
I like the first two CSI shows, 1 2 & 4 Law & Order shows, The Amazing Race, Survivor, Third Watch (which ends Friday,) Without a Trace, and American Idol. We've been watching the Apprentice, the Contender, Deperate Housewives, and Boston Legal, as well.
I like rereuns of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and we have seasons 1-7 of M*A*S*H* on DVD.
We watch football, from pre-season through the Superbowl, and I like basketball...although not as much as I used to. I rooting for the Miami Heat to win the NBA championship. I like Alonzo Mourning and I want to see Shaq thumb his nose at the Lakers for choosing the wrong marquee player to keep.
I also tape and skim through several soap operas...I've been watching those pretty much my whole life...now I write for a soap website. Who'da thought watchin' daytime dramas would ever payoff!
Most everything is taped in our house, so we can watch without commercials and at our leisure. Somethings build up and we watch in summer during rereuns of other shows.
We still do active things outside the house...we still write articles for publications...CleverDan still gets his classwork done and is getting "A"s...nothing is suffering just because we enjoy some entertainment.
I think people who declare there's "nothing good on T.V." are throwing the proverbial baby out with the bathwater. there is quality T.V. to be found, especially on the History and Discovery channels...and occasionally on PBS (I watched some excellent documentaries lately.) And people with children need to be more careful...but that's a parent's duty in every respect of life.

To add to my earlier post....
At Dish Network, when someone calls in to order service, one of the questions we ask (in order to see what programming package will work for them) is "Are there any channels that you know that you will need to have?" I have asked that question over a thousand times, and I would estimate that out of all those times, 3 of them have not said MTV and/or VH1.

How could you not love TV these days? There is literally something for everyone! Personally, I love real life medical programs, like "Trauma, Life in the ER", "Critical Hour", and "Dr. G, Medical Examiner". My husband loves Sci Fi and Westerns. We both enjoy catching up on the news. My daughters like to watch "How Do I Look?" on the Style Channel, and my son watches cartoons and video game reviews.
Now, with Comcast's On Demand, I can catch shows that I might not normally watch, just because I can see them when I want too. I like "Seconds from Disaster" and "Voyages to the Edge" on the National Geographic channel. On Demand is great for homeschoolers because I can go through all the programs to find things that correspond to what we are studying, and then we can watch them whenever we want.
We have never withheld TV from our kids, nor have we used it as a reward or punishment. It's just there and my kids can watch it whenever they want. As a result, it holds no mystery to them. They are not transfixed by it and in fact, don't spend much time watching it. They have learned that TV is a helpful and entertaining tool that allows them a little "down time" when they need it.
I say, hooray for TV!

Somethings build up and we watch in summer during rereuns of other shows. You might want to look into getting a Tivo. It was made just for you. It would probably save you a lot of time, reduce clutter, and possibly save you money over the long term depending on how often you buy tapes.
You buy the unit, and have the option to "subscribe" to the programming guide. By doing that you can have it automatically record shows even when their time slots move around. You can have it record anything with certain keywords, too. (My friend wanted to record Detroit Lions games, so set it up to record "Lions." After getting a few nature shows in the mix, he changed it to record "Lions at," as in "Lions at Pittsburgh.")

Television is the 'true' opiate of the masses.
Because television is a form of passive learning, it requires no thinking skills. Reading on the other hand requires the construction of concepts, places, events, characters, etc. in the mind of the reader and thoughtful consideration of which option to choose is required for each of these. Since these constructs are not provided by default, mental skills are required to produce them. Unlike television, reading allows one to pause and reflect on what has been written which develops critical thinking skills. (try a web search on television and passive learning)
Television is a medium among many others by which information can be communicated. If it's use is viewed in light of it's limitations, it can be a useful tool. If it is a hinderance in our relationship with God, with others or harmful to ourselves, then it has become and idol and we must repent.
If you're really against Television, here is the website for you...

I have learned plenty from television.
There are plenty of opportunities to learn from television. One of my personal favorites is MythBusters (http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/mythbusters/mythbusters.html). Something is blown up at least every other show, so it is not only educational but entertaining as well! :D
In addition to being a method of passive learning, it has been hypothesized that television watching contributes to short attention span and eventually leads to the development of ADD (especially in young children). Television appeals first to our senses (sights and sounds), and secondly to our congnitive faculties (like reason and what is true or false). When reading, we are in better control of accepting or rejecting the material because we must inititate the learning process, and we must rely more heavily upon previously learned concepts to judge the content for consistency/accuracy with what we aready know (or must learn to procede).
Not only has television reduced the ability to think critically by it's method of passive learning, our schools have contributed to this problem by steering teachers into 'fact based' teaching. Tests have been reduced to multiple choice and true false questions, and fewer essay type questions that demonstrate the student has truly absorbed and comprehends the material being taught. Education no longer teaches critical thinking, but this is a completely different topic...
