Knight needs to reconsider, this is a great idea, and would really compliment TOL.

With my radio background, implementation would not be difficult.

TOL would be better if we had a TOL Lounge again. I've put a chat link on the first page of the Redneck Lounge, but it's kind of buried--most people won't see it. I know of an offsite chat you can link to that could host the TOL lounge, and it's free. They don't mind if you set up a chat and link to them.

taoist
September 18th, 2003, 03:11 AM
Crow, try creating a thread with the link to the lounge, closing it, and making it a note so it stays up on top of the forum. I think you can do all of those things with your moderator priviliges.

Omega, I'll see your spelling and raise you a definition.

Anti-dis-establishmentari-an-ism was the credo adopted by the original Elliot Ness gang pursuing the rumrunners. An antidisestablishmentarianist is the redneck moonshiner's most dreaded foe. Revenuers, all of 'em.

As far as I know Antidisestablishmentarianism

was the state of being AGAINST the people who

were AGAINST the Establishment of the Church of England.

  :help: :kookoo:

Antidisestablishmentarianism is a political philosophy that is

opposed to the separation of church and state. The term

originated in the context of the nineteenth century Church of

England; antidisestablismentarians were opposed to proposals

to remove its status as the state church of England.

The term has largely fallen into disuse, although the issue itself

is still current; witness recent disputes in the UK

over the Act of Settlement.

It can be broken down as follows:

~ism ....................... the philosophy of

~arian~ ................. those people who believe in

anti~ ...................... opposition to

~dis~ ...................... the removal of

~establishment~ .. the Church of England as the official state church

Antidisestablishmentarianism is often quoted as one of the

longest English words that has an actual meaning.

Yowza, Omega, well call me a disestablishmentarianist, that beats my busted flush. While I'm certain I read the description I gave somewhere, yours seems much more consistent with the derivation of the word, and necessarily would predate mine.

TOL would be better without the political leaning in the profile. Or perhaps one that offered more options than the one dimensional scale right/left. I'm very left on a lot of issues, and very right on others, and growing more and more convinced that politics doesn't matter when it comes to the Kingdom.

Describing myself as 'more left than right' really doesn't mean anything, but it was the one I least disliked calling myself.

Maybe there should be a few more options. "Apolitical"? "Politically schizoprhenic"? "Outside the box"?

I agree with this.
I would also like to see a spell-checker. I'm like Clete, only worse.
I would also like to see a little more control against spamming threads.
Many good threads are often destroyed by one-line idiotic comments directed toward a poster, rather than a well thought-out idea being directed toward furthering the conversation. Even on this thread we have seen how that can distract from the purpose of the thread. I am all for discussion, but there is also a place for some limits that allow for both civility and the progress of thought. Many people who get banned wind up getting banned after being drawn into a "verbal fist fight". I miss some of those people's thinking, even if I was opposed to their ideas.

I have to say that I don't really agree. If Knight were to add a half dozen additional options I wouldn't really mind it at all but the way it is he has a range of options from all the way left to somewhere in the middle to all the way right. What more could you really ask for? There is no way to have enough options to satisfy everyone and forcing people to choose the one that BEST fits instead of the one that fits perfectly works as well as anything.

I feel a bit like white being asked if I'm more red or blue, and so I put down purple. Or being asked "Have you stopped beating your wife" and being forced to only answer a range between yes and no. If you're unmarried, female, or have never beaten her, you end up putting down "mostly". It becomes meaningless.

I think you're right about adding options, though. I'd rather get rid of it altogether, or include one more option like "none of the above". Or, "I don't see politics in one dimensional terms."

Well, maybe some day the American two party system will be broken open, and Americans will be introduced to a two dimensional spectrum.

At any rate, I've resolved to randomly change it whenever I remember.

TOL would be better if they included a FAQ. This would not only save time for the mods but will also help users who don't want to be embarrassed by asking such a common question. This can be seen by this post:

this is like the most common question asked by noobs.

To most, being referred to as a "noob" isn't very welcoming. I'm sure it wasn't intentional but the term is often used as a way to put people down. If there is a FAQ, then it should be a sticky.

Editing in advanced mode is fine with me but is it possible to have the editing in the page itself just for quick edits?

I think more interesting appellations could be in order. we start out with rookie and then journeyman, and maybe some others, but being in the over 1,000 posts club, or over 500 posts club, or the over 1500 posts club, or all the other clubs gets a bit less interesting

Hate to break this to ya, but thats already been invented. The TOL FAQ is up there at the top between 'Register' and 'Member List'. Ya....

Sorry, my gamer lingo sometimes slips into my posts. Wasn't trying to offend anyone.

Cup holders.

 Hey, why not create an official TOL beer koozie for the online store? You know BB would buy like ten of 'em.

No... I'm not that ignorant as to not notice that. However, if you read the FAQ, there isn't much questions regarding the forum itself such as the common "newbie" questions. It's the same type of FAQ that everyone else has on their forums.

This may be a stupid idea but wouldn't it be nice to have a "links" sub-topic or thread? Sharing links would certainly be intriguing but the con is that people might repeat the same links.

You could probably blow up one of the pics from the Knight cam into poster size. Go to Kinko's.

No problem

That's true but i usually check my info up before i talk to mods or suggest something. Don't want to look like a idiot :p

More suggestions:

1. Get a faster feedback response from mods.

2. How about some ichat style smilies? I don't think the smilies we have now match this forum style.

TheologyOnLine would be better if...

there were a spell checker for those of us who are still recovering from our public school educational experience!

and...

easy access to a lot more smilies!

 Especially the spell checker part.

:rotfl: Nah, i would only neg rep people when they present something awful or simply offending. It didn't really offend me. ;)

Did you have a concern?

Not much of a concern per se but a suggestion. As mentioned before a FAQ would do nicely for new people. I for one don't know what the stars are for. I've observed, however, that my stars increased due to my posts which might be the answer.

Usually when suggestions are mentioned, mods would respond and they'll either agree or give reasons for disagreeing. Not needed of course but some might want to hear what the mods have to say.

PURPLE star for every 10,000 posts.

GREEN star for every 1,000 posts

BLUE stars for every 100 posts

And GOLD stars for every 10 posts.

So, once you get over 10 stars at one level; you get one star for the next level and start over at the initial level.

For instance lets say you have 99 posts. You would have 9 yellow stars. But then, when you get 100 posts you would get your first blue star and start over collecting yellow stars.

Thanks for the reply but i still don't understand why there isn't a faq. Bah, forget it. I shouldn't push it.

No i already answered that but thanks...

This might be what you want.

That's not really an answer but i guess people who really want an answer could just read the whole thing or waste time by asking questions. The pro for this would be that the new user would get a free boost in posts.

I was aware of it though but just wanted to save the admins/moderator's time. Perhaps they have too much time already!
