Reload this Page Hymns or Praise and Worship?

Not sure how often i will use this blog to offer up my opinion and other random musings but at this point i plan to include commentary on my Political and Spiritual journey(past and present), my Song lyrics(old and new), and whatever else i decide is fit for public consumption(or not).

When available i will include a link to an mp3 to the given entry in My Song Lyrics category..... in general this music will be Hard Rock or Metal.

Hymns or Praise and Worship?

Posted April 21st, 2012 at 04:14 PM by Cleekster
My mother(and kids) attend a southern baptist Church who is currently battling over this issue with people actually leaving the church over it which is a bit childish imo.

For years they had separate services, one with a choir and an organ doing hymns and an earlier service doing P&W music. the older patrons of the Church who initially were completely opposed to any contemporary service agreed to this compromise and the stipulation that the traditional service would always be there.

a couple preachers later and they have a preacher who lives an hour away and wants to have one[contemporary ]service.

and so begins the war.....where the younger more open-minded folk want the Church to move forward and the older more legalistic folk want the church to be stuck in the dark ages.

this isn't rocket science ya know......it's really simple in my estimation, have the Praise band do some hymns within the service where the keyboard player uses an organ sound and the drummer uses some maracas or something subtle like brushes on a jazz kit type thing.

but oh no to the more conservative folks anything other than choir> organ> hymns is like the unpardonable sin of worship or something.

i think this is such an immature and childish thing to be arguing over never mind leaving the church over.

don't get me wrong i would never attend anything other than a churches contemporary service because i think hymns are boring and preachy.....though i'll admit that P&W choruses could be a bit more in your face theologically....OTOH, that's what sermons are for.....but i'm not going to leave the church just because they aren't playing my kind of music.

makes me glad i rid myself of this headache a long time ago.

Worship is an attitude of heart & soul

Hi cleekster,

I agree that a compromise, blending or synthesis of both traditional and modern worship ought to be integrated. If such music facilitates the soul and spirit to worship God and is contemporary to the times we live in (young and old live in this same generation of NOW)....such can be used maximally to the glory of God, where every soul in the congregation can be lifted into the Presence of God.

'God' is in the spirit, feeling, intent and atmosphere of the people, inhabiting their worship, no matter the form or style of music, although such would naturally be conducive to attuning the soul to magnify the Lord!

'God' is in the still small voice, the heart-aspirations, will and disposition of the worshipper, - this is enhanced in corporate worship if the congregation is truly surrended to Him, allowing the Holy Spirit liberty to move and manifest in their midst!

Glory to the Shekinah

hey freelight!...thanks for stopping by and adding your 2 cents.... i posted this when i was still a bit miffed at the absurdity of it, and then decided it would make a good thread(possibly).

i tend to take the view that no matter how sure i am about being right about a thing there always exists the possibility that i am wrong or that someone else may have a better understanding or perspective on it.
