Well, yes, slavery denotes being "owned". But is that immoral in and of itself?

Well, yes, slavery denotes not having personal freedom, but is that immoral in and of itself?
I think you take it a bit too far when you say, "any notion of freedom". Slavery could be for a given period of time, and freeing slaves was not unheard of.

Men misuse many things, slavery can be one of them.
Is there a "moral" use of slavery in for today? I'm sure you think that enslaving a race such as was done with African Americans was an immoral case, but how can it be used morally?

You nailed a big moral problem by pinpointing enslavement based on ethnicity.
I can see it used in a moral way in cases where folks are having financial difficulties. I would say as a punishment for crime, but I'm not really sure which crime would be fitting for such a punishment.

Financial difficulties? Being a slave certainly wouldn't help them out of those difficulties.
Punishment? possibly....in what way? A slave to who? The state? where would they work?

Yes, it could. Let's say someone who has no insurence gets into an automobile accident. They have no way of repaying the damage. The only thing they have is themselves, perhaps being paid minimum wage. If a deal could be stuck, the person could go into servitude to repay the debt.

Well, now that you mention it, "bustin' rocks" and road crews used inmates at one point. Then it was deemed "cruel and unusual punishment", now they get central air and cable.

serve the person who they were in the accident with? someone else?
doing whatever the slave-owner wants? or are there restrictions on it? you'd have to put some monetary value on the work, so is it minimum wage?

What is the practical difference between legal privatized prison and slavery?
A 'touchy-feely' CNN reporter, while interviewing an Army sniper asked, "What do you feel when you shoot a terrorist?" The Soldier shrugged and replied..... "Recoil."
A definition being used for "slavery" in this thread may be useful......
Good idea
slavery:
1. The state of one bound in servitude as the property of a slaveholder or household.
2. 1. The practice of owning slaves.
4. A condition of hard work and subjection:
n 1: the state of being under the control of another person
Webser's also has a good definition: 2 : submission to a dominating influence

Are we assuming the slave is provided nothing except shelter and food? no money?
or is slavery just not being able to leave?
