Steam power foretold the end of slavery. The development of the small IC engine provided the nails for the coffin.

This is a good point. I've thought, in terms of economics, that which is pragmatic will win over altruism.
Of course there are always politicians who huff and puff and claim virtue where there is really only opportunism and ego.

New developments in the story.

An eastern Kentucky church under a firestorm of criticism since members voted to bar mixed-race couples from joining the congregation overturned that decision Sunday, saying it welcomes all believers.

He said the resolution to welcome all believers passed with a unanimous vote
I wonder what happened to the nine members who started this garbage?

They weren't counting on this kind of publicity and got wise quick. Insincere, but prudent.

Theocrats are Social Darwinists.

Christianity has nothing applicable, appropriate, or worthwhile to offer the 21st century.

Yup, often, that which is pragmatic is closely akin to survival.

I don't think they were, either. Surely, though, they had to know it would get overturned. Not only would there be an outcry, but they belong to a larger denomination that doesn't hold that view. Strange how nine people started this mess, but the story doesn't mention them. Did they leave the church?
