One could just as easily interpret the passage as an exhortation to speak under the direction (our advocate) of the Holy Spirit ie; teach or preach according to the word, and not necessarily only speak of future events (the inspiration) - prophesy!

John 14:25;26

Dear STP,
What flattery with which you flatter the Holy Spirit.
You still can't find a fault with the scriptures showed me.
You asked:
Quote:
Did Paul follow Jesus of Nazareth or did Paul receive instruction from risen ascended Lord of Glory?
The Bible says
Quote:
Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

Joh 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Lk 9:29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.
30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:
31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.

Joh 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
Jesus had the glory before the world ever was. The apostles beheld His glory while He was Jesus of Nazareth. And, Jesus will have the same glory when we see him.

Jesus Christ showed His disciples how to follow God as a dear child.
Jesus Christ sent His disciples to teach the nations how to follow God as dear children.
Following God as a dear child will teach you all the theology you need.

Dear STP,
You brought up Ro. 8:1. Did you ever consider the scriptures right before it?
Quote:
Ro 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
We have a treasure in earthen vessels. Paul, even, followed Christ with his heart and mind. Yet, he hated what his flesh did. He worked on his flesh problem all the time.
Quote:
1 Co 9:24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
The work of grace calls us to be gracious to others so that we may obtain grace.
Quote:
Ga 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
The word of faith starts in our hearts according to the election of God. As we believe in His grace as His Son demonstrated and explained it, we demonstrate it to others. As we demonstrate grace/sow to the Spirit, we do it expecting to reap in due season.

Quote:
Php 3:8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,
9 ¶ And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.
12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.
13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.
16 Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.
Paul, even here, did not feel as if he had attained to the resurrection. He was still striving and pressing. He says we should have the same mind, maintaining what has been attained and being open to anything God might be saying about better service.

Jesus Christ showed His disciples how to follow God as a dear child.
Jesus Christ sent His disciples to teach the nations how to follow God as dear children.
Following God as a dear child will teach you all the theology you need.

Dear STP,
Have you noticed how everything you write is meant to get me to turn through a suggestion of condemnation? You did not learn that from the Spirit. Your tendency to misrepresent scripture is very like that which Satan demonstrated against Jesus.
For example, this passage to which you alluded with partial a quote has a context which makes it clear that their are ordinances of men and things that come from heaven.
Quote:
Col 2:20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,
21 (Touch not; taste not; handle not;
22 Which all are to perish with the using after the commandments and doctrines of men?
23 Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.
3:1 ¶ If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
You're such an actor. I find it easy to imagine you politically active in order to enact and enforce ordinances of men while you would condemn me for teaching the commandments of the Lord.
Do you vote in political elections, STP? Is it to elect men who would pass an ordinance banning ordinances?

Quote:
1Co 11:24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
Quote:
1 Co 14:37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.
Why do you despise the natural meaning of these words?

Jesus Christ showed His disciples how to follow God as a dear child.

Dear STP,
You asked...
Quote:
Is there any condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus?
It thrills me that you would bring in Ro 8:1. Until now, I thought you believed that Romans was not for gentiles.
Let's see all of it.
Quote:
1 ¶ There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
There is no condemnation for those who walk after the Spirit and not the flesh. The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus sets us free from the law of sin and death.
However, following after the Spirit which was on Jesus Christ means following after charity.
Quote:
2 Co 8:9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.
10 And herein I give my advice: for this is expedient for you, who have begun before, not only to do, but also to be forward a year ago.
11 Now therefore perform the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to will, so there may be a performance also out of that which ye have.
12 For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.
Remember those stingy men in Thessalonica who would'nt even share themselves in labor?
Quote:
2 Thes 3:6 ¶ Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.
7 For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;
8 Neither did we eat any man’s bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you:
9 Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us.
10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.
12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.
Paul condemned them by saying, "Don't let them eat" as if it were a command from our Lord Jesus Christ.
Quote:
2 Thes 3:6 ¶ Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.
7 For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;

Dear All12,
I believe you're right, in a way.
Quote:
2Ki 17:13 Yet the LORD testified against Israel, and against Judah, by all the prophets, and by all the seers, saying, Turn ye from your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets.

1 Cor 14:24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:
25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

Re 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

I've not settled my views yet about the more popular gifts many seek today, tongues etc. I'm a Calvinist but many of my early walk was with friends who were from Calvary Chapel, Maranatha Chapel, Horizon, etc. The times I saw the gifts on display it appeared to be a bit pointless, so I have been skeptical ever since.

What would be great is if the simpler gifts of hospitality and service were as popular, think how much we could do in our outreach. I'm a simple person and I believe Jesus was too, "here's how you can learn to keep my commandments - love one another, and love others as you do yourself." Matthew 22:37;38;39 -:- Mark 12:31

my addendum - "when you get that figured out come and see me and we'll discuss lesson #2"

The Spirit of Christ is the spirit of prophecy and those who have the spirit of Christ should understand prophecy. Prophecy that matters as far as the Scriptures go is understanding in the Bible what was, so we can then have an idea of what will be in the future rather than falling victims for a bunch of false doctrines.

To get a different opinion of what had been and what will in the future be all you have to do is listen to a different denomination everyday, and you'll hear something different about the Scriptures and the future from each one of them.

James proved his faith by works that were divine works in agreement with the others who preached that it was the signs and wonders a.k.a. divine works that showed the proof of God's approval of a person.

It was the elders of the church that the sick would go to an order to be healed of their diseases, not the newborn babes in Christ who cannot prove their faith with works that are done by God through them such as healing or raising the dead etc. etc.

Dear Livelystone,
1 Co 14:24-25 says that when all prophesy when there is an unbeliever or an unlearned person present, everone who prophesies judges the unbeliever/unlearned manifesting the secrets of his heart and causing him to fall on his face to worship God.
I can see why some would wish this away.

Dear All12,
Much of what I have written recently directs attention to both commandments in 1 Co 14:1: Follow after charity is the first commandment in that chapter, and, desire spiritual gifts is the second. However, Paul tells us, in 1 Co 14:37, that the things he writes to them are the commandments of the Lord.
So, those who follow Christ start desiring spiritual gifts when they earn He comanded them to do that.

Jesus Christ showed His disciples how to follow God as a dear child.

Paul also says in the exact same chapter..........

1Cor.14 3But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

Bottom line is you can prophesy a word of knowledge concerning the person's heart that you're prophesying over, or you can be doing what I mentioned above through understanding the (true) prophecies of the Scriptures of what has been and what will be.

Your faith is what you believe and if you believe in the truth because somebody explained to you the prophecies of Scripture, it has been to your edification, exhortation, and comfort. Consequently your faith has been increased because of somebody's ability to understand the prophecies of Scriptures.

Without understanding the prophecies of Scriptures is why we have all different types of false doctrines being taught in the church. AKA such prophecies as what we just had when someone prophesied the rapture of the church last year that caused many unbelievers to mock all of the church when it did not happen, all because of the false prophecies of a few who do not understand prophecy WITHIN the scriptures.

Blessings

Doug
