You are still saved when you sin... as long as it is NOT mortal sin - April 30th, 2012, 05:36 PM

St Paul speaks of "sin unto death"

and sin that is not unto death

death = mortal

he has some strong things to say about even praying for someone in mortal sin...

but i dont recall where that psg is... and am running out of time...

St Mt 18:23-35

in any case... If you refrain from mortal sin,

yes, you are still saved...

but in the aformentioned psg, one who commits mortal (If you do not forgive you will not be forgiven), different story...

1 John 5:16-17
16If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
17All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

You posted and referenced some Scripture here, but where is the Scripture that states there is a mortal sin, and that it is unforgivable?

There is only one unforgiveable/mortal sin in the NT.

Mark 3:29
"But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost has never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation" (Mark 3:29).

To refuse to believe in Jesus Christ and not receive the Holy Spirit,

Paul (then Saul) could not have been forgiven neither in that world nor in the world to come.

Matthew 12:31 KJV Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

Matthew 12:32 KJV And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

Either Jesus Christ lied or something changed. God was going to do something different when he saved the chief of sinners who was before a blasphemer.

In Paul (then Saul) FIRST, Jesus Christ showed forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them that should thereafter believe on Him to everlasting life:

1 Timothy 1:12-16 KJV And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; 13 Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. 14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. 15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. 16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.

1. I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. may indicate that the unforgiveable sin is knowingly blaspheming the Holy Spirt, ie assigning His works to the devil.

This would be done by a demonic human in a position of authority who recognised the Christ and the Spirit (as we have witness many demons did) but hid his knowledge to stand against them and uphold his position.

Peace, Ted

How long does it take you to compose your opening posts?

"If a sheerly linguistic version of the gospel could be concocted, it would merely so be no longer the gospel. In the Lutheran Reformation’s understanding, which we believe in this matter to be correct, the sacraments make the inalienable externality of the gospel message and therefore are necessary to the authenticity of that message." To refuse to believe in Jesus Christ and not receive the Holy Spirit,
and that is what the Roman CatholicChurch teaches..

too bad everyone isn't RC

there are a lot of WEIRD notions about what the unforgivable sin is

Doesn't the RCC teach that those who die in mortal sin are lost?

The title of your thread implied it. As far as I've always been told, "mortal sin" is unforgivable, according to RCC doctrine and dogma.

However, you did say that salvation was lost at such a time as one commits a mortal sin. You haven't shown that from Scripture, so...

If to die isn't gain you're living in vain.

Nope. I see NO escape clause for "ignorantly in unbelief" in Matthew 12:31-32 KJV

1 Timothy 1:16 KJV Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.
