Where Mary and Joseph married before Jesus was born? -

I am real wanting to know is sexual intercourse is required for a marriage to occur?
To be a wife of a man, does she have to be married to that man?
If marriage is a “covenant” relationship when does it occur and can there be an extend transition period going from not having a covenant to having a covenant without instructions on how you treat a wife you are not married to?
In answering the thread title...yes I believe Mary and Joseph married before she gave birth to Jesus. I do not believe Joseph knew her until quite some time later. I can not substantiate either of those beliefs using the Bible.
Lets use some logic...
1. Mary was a virgin, so it is likely they were not married when Jesus was conceived.
2. At the time, being pregnant out of wed-lock was almost certain death, so they probably got married once the knew Jesus was coming.
3. After they got married, they had other children, so Mary was no longer a virgin.
Before you judge someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, if it turns out they are right and get mad at you, they are a mile away and barefoot.

I believe Matthew says that Joseph took Mary home to be his wife, but did not consummate the marriage until after Jesus was born and the time of purification was complete.
So, I guess, no.
I don't care how systematic your theology is, until you show me how biblical it is.
2 Tim 2:15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

I think the question is whether it was consummated.

So, I guess, no.
Can a woman be a wife of a man and not married to that man?
What makes you think “marriage” requires sexual intercourse?
Why can’t sexual intercourse be part of marriage and not be a requirement for marriage?
We can establish a covenant relationship with God without sex, so why can’t a man establish a covenant relationship with a woman without sex?

They were married and they had sex before Jesus was born.
Matthew 1:19-25
"Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.
20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.
22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:
25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus."
The expression, "to knew her not" is used Biblically in a sense that is not Western in origin.
For a husband and wife "to know" is to have sex that results in pregnancy.
Joseph and Mary did not have sex that resulted in pregnancy until after Jesus Christ was born.
Joseph and Mary had four sons and at least three daughters.
Joseph and Mary had sexual intercourse with each other.

You did not highlight the verse that says that Joseph did not have sex with his married before Jesus was born.
25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus."

I did not, but I did embolden that part of the verse that indicated that Joseph took his wife unto himself.
Likewise, I pointed out that Joseph and Mary did not have sex that resulted in pregnancy before Jesus was born.
They did however have sex, for Joseph took unto him his wife.
They were married.
Joseph, having found out Mary was pregnant, three months worth, was considering how to deal with the situation.
He was not going to consummate the marriage if he was going to divorce her.
The angel reassured Joseph and told him to go ahead an take her.
Take her, have sex with her.
God blessed them.

Read the highlited section he did not "know her' which indicates sexually, yet was married to her. You are assuming they have to have sex to be married? Why do you make that assumption and why could Joseph not just take her to live with him being married without having sex?
