The purpose of this thread is to establish a resource on TOL for all current and future TOL users. I am asking that everyone refrain from commenting on anything except the topic. I will start another thread for your comments. I can only do that if it is allowed, I need to hear from Knight or a Moderator before I proceed.
I am removing everyone from my ignore list except the atheists, they don't believe we are under the influence of a governing force outside of us, i.e. God.
The Challenge is to find all words in the New Testament attributed to Jesus that are not directly quoted or paraphrased from the Old Testament. There should be nothing in this thread except a list of those words.
I guess I should have asked for the book/chapter/verse also.

As we read Matthew the first words that Jesus are attributed with are found in Mat 1:15
Quote:
15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
The next thing we read attributed to Jesus is in Mat 4:4
Quote:
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
This is found in Deut 8:3
Quote:
And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live.

Matt 4:7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
{from Deuteronomy 6:16 "Do not put the LORD your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah."}
Matt 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
[Deuteronomy 6:13] "The LORD your God you shall fear; him you shall serve, and by his name alone you shall swear."}
Matt 4:19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
No OT parallel. Clasifing men as different types of fish is attributed to Gamaliel
Quote:
Since the Hillel school of thought is presented collectively, there are very few other teachings which are clearly identifiable as Gamaliel's. There is only a somewhat cryptic dictum, comparing his students to classes of fish:
Quote:
A ritually impure fish: one who has memorised everything by study, but has no understanding, and is the son of poor parents A ritually pure fish: one who has learnt and understood everything, and is the son of rich parents A fish from the Jordan River: one who has learnt everything, but doesn't know how to respond A fish from the Mediterranean: one who has learnt everything, and knows how to respond
Gosh I thought the first words were when he was missing but turned up teaching in the temple. Wasn't he about 12?
I could be wrong, but I started wih Matthew and didn't see it. Can you give the Chapter and verse? That's what this thread is for.
Btw, I encorauge every one to correct any errors found in this list. All errors.
I do remember Him saying He must be about His faters business but I don't remember which gospel it's in. I am gonig in the order of most NT's and I am only doing the 4 gospels.

Now that seems a bit silly since no one knows which book was first written.

If you read my post carefully you will see

Nobody has to paticipate but some already have and I thank them for there time.
If you read the OP, you can see that I am also adding the verses that ARE in the OT. The words of Jesus are easy to find, if you hve a red letter edition of the NT.

maybe, if readers knew my intention with this thread they might get interested (just a thought)
I'm sure some have alresdy made up their minds about what I'm doing but I'll bet they are wrong. Nobody asked "why" I asked for words of Jesus that are not in the OT.
A Rabbi wrote a book called Kosher Jesus (I just got a copy 2 days ago). In his promotion of the book he says; with only rare exception is Jesus quoted as saying anything that is not found in the OT.
I am trying to investigate that claim, so far it doesn't seem right, but I won't know until I examine every word that is attributed to Jesus. I have a list of NT/OT parallels, now I am sorting out the rest.
This takes many hours of study and I was hoping for some help. I guess yall ain't up for any of that. So be it.......I'll not be discouraged though.
I have revamped my format again (I'm making this up as I go). You will see it in the next post.
I will move the earlier verses to the new format later. Right now I will post words attributted to Jesus that are known to have OT parallels and then post those that don't. When I finish a book (of the 4 gospels) I will consolidate the list for that book. I'm trying to build a usable resorurce for anyone who is interested. I could do this all myself, post it on my websites and leave TOL out altogether but I feel such a resourse will draw traffic for TOL. I am not a paid subscriber and thought that might be a way I could contribute something other than what I have been doing.
