I do not think Viruses are technically considered "alive", which is odd considering they can die. The reason I say they are not alive is because they lack metabolism a necessary characteristic of life.

As of yesterday, there have been 14 deaths this year alone (and many more sick( in Dallas, TX. due to west nile virus.
Dallas is only around 50 miles from where I am.

Indiana is worried about West Nile Virus too. I haven't heard of any deaths yet here. I'll have to check into it. Thanks.

I cannot think of another microbe that is so ambiguous. Every thing on Earth either is or is not alive. They have all the characteristics of a living organism, or they don't.
Viruses are somewhere in between.

Never studied population genetics, um?
Lots of math for you there.
BTW, the one virus I know about that would threaten us as a species if transmitted by air would be rabies. Everyone but one person who has contracted the disease has died. Of course we do have successful vaccinations to prevent it.
Ebola is pretty bad, but even there, 10% of the population survives an infection.
Genetic diversity is a huge advantage for a species.

All life is said the be cellular as well and viruses are not made of cells.
Viruses don't "die" per se they fall apart and become non-infectious. Most are just packets of nucleic acid and protein.
They can reproduce inside of a living cell and because they have genetic material they can evolve.

Viruses are somewhere in between.
The evidence suggests that they are not pre-life, but rather bit of living things that managed to escape and take off on their own.
Even less alive, but capable of reproduction are the prions. They are merely proteins, with no DNA or RNA at all.

In Indiana, we've just had our 3rd death confirmed.
