You have to be kidding calling that gun impractical? I have watched that video before. What a fantastic story. I would absolutely love to own the modern equivalent of that gun. Which would, of coarse be pumped up quickly by a high volume air compressor.

Yes, it is impractical, but very nifty.
Lewis and Clark had people assigned to keeping the gun pumped up! They did keep it ready to go and, the way they used that gun, is credited by historians as one of the key reasons for the success of their mission.

Don't get me wrong, the history of this gun with regards to Lewis and Clark is fascinating and significant. But the failure of the gun as mainstream gun was its long reload time and its proneness to failure.
