JPost.comDiplomacy and Politics Cyprus inaugurates 'Embassy of State of
Palestine' By JPOST.COM STAFF 02/08/2013 17:36 During visit of PA FM Malki,
Cyprus upgrades status of Palestinian diplomatic representation; PA hails
"historic decision."
Cyprus voted for the Palestinian upgrade at the United Nations last November to
that of non-member observer state.
Malki hailed the “historic decision” and urged other countries to follow
Cyprus, which over the past two years has significantly improved ties with
Israel, became the first Western European country in the EU outside of Malta to
upgrade its Palestinian representation to that of an embassy on Friday.
“This important decision is in line with the recognition of the Palestinian
State in 1988 by the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Cyprus,” Cypriot
Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou Markoullis said during a visit by
Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riad Malki.
Related: Abbas, Mashaal to discuss renewal of unity efforts with Iran
to recognition of the State of Palestine,” and “follow the relevant practice
of seven other EU member states that have recognized the Palestinian State also
in 1988, namely, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, the Czech
Republic and Malta.”
The Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia and Poland – all former Iron
Curtain countries – are currently among Israel’s strongest supporters inside the
EU.
Jerusalem had no response to the Cypriot move.
Israel’s relations with Cyprus, as well as with Greece, skyrocketed with the
sharp deterioration in its ties with Turkey following the Mavi Marmara incident
although Israeli officials have said the reason for the dramatic change
was not only Turkey.

Eh, big whoop.
The Israelis still have the better-trained army, the better-armed army, and when pushed will fight with fanatical desperation.
Let other countries "recognize" a Palestinian state all they want.

Um, they are called Palestinians because they were there first. Most are genetically related to the original Christian and Jewish inhabitants of the region. They ARE in their home country.

Not quite. They are called Palestinians because they choose to be. What is a Palestinian? The best I can come up with is "an Arab that lived in the Palestine region in 1948, or one of their descendants". So a Syrian that came down to Palestine to work in 1945, would be considered a Palestinian. And if he escaped during Israel's war of independence in 1949, their great grandchildren would still be considered refugees (and receive UN money).
One of the greatest ironies is the name itself. Most Palestinians can't pronounce the word Palestine (a hard "P" doesn't exist in Arabic, and they will usually mispronounce is Falestine or Balistine). Where did the name "Palestine" come from? The Romans, after squashing the Jewish rebellion, wanted to symbolically break the Jews' tie to their homeland - so they renamed it based on another people living in the area - the Philistines (a Greek based people, unrelated to modern Palestinians). The name "Philistines" means foreign invaders in Hebrew.
So the Arabs living in historical Israel have unwittingly chosen to call themselves the Foreign Invaders, and pretend they are a nation.

Having dispelled some misinformation, I agree that the current situation where the Palestinians have no citizenship anywhere is not acceptable. The only way this can be resolved is by direct talks with the Israelis, where the Palestinian's state rights will be addressed, while maintaining Israel's security.
The Palestinians refuse to even sit down and talk. Instead, they push for unilateral actions, like their UN bids or the current embassy upgrade. Their end game is to be recognized as a state, while continuing to work to destroy Israel by any means.
As much as I support their bid for statehood, any support for unilateral actions will push the Palestinians even further away from the negotiation table.
"What if the Hokie Pokie is really what it's all about?"
You think a map proves it? The name palestinian is a recent adoption. Many of the people there have had their ancestors living there for centuries. The adopted the invading Arab nationality when it swept through the area along with some invaders. In Roman Britain, everyone was a Roman, but they were still largely the indigenous population. Same in Palestine.
I'd note that the indigenous population of the US spent a long time being called native Americans, even though they were there before the invention of America by the invaders. They are American citizens now, and speak English, but they were there first. Same for the Palestinians.

The demography of Israel is monitored by the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics. The State of Israel has a population of approximately 7,933,200 inhabitants as of 2012.[1][2] 75.4 percent of them are Jewish (about 5,978,600 individuals), 20.6 percent are Arabs (about 1,636,600 individuals),
Looks like more than a million and a half of them manage to live peacefully alongside the Jews as Israeli citizens.
I believe the ones who want to claim a "Palestinian State" are the same ones who applaud blowing up school buses full of Jewish children.

Who gives a ratz patootie about them?
That's a logical fallacy, Res. The suicide bombers are Arabs who want an independent Palestine therefore all Arabs who want an independent Palestine are suicide bombers. Pah!
You can do better that that.

I believe that's called creating a strawman, gc
I believe you have suggested that the people wanting a state of their own also like killing civilians.
The 'strawman' is the real one, I think.
