people usually vote Economy rather than Life

when their own life is in jeopardy, maybe that will change...

I favor a budget surplus by whatever means it requires. Raise taxes (individual and corporate), cut military spending, cut medicare, cut social security, cut homeland security, cut, cut, cut and raise taxes while closing loopholes. Do all the things people say are needed to balance the budget and then keep it either balanced or in surplus. Then, and only then decide where additional spending might be a good thing but only if the budget remains balanced.
