The idea is to vote your principles, from among candidates that embody those principles. The idea that only the Reps or Dems represent 'my' principles is to force me into voting for candidates which are less than ideal. We have seen a seamless transition from one political party to the next , both however, are leading the nation to a point of change dramatically different from what the ideals of Liberty and freedom could support. One fine example, under a Rep Pres., you were given the Patriot Act, under a Dem Pres., you will be given Unlimited Internment. The political machines are simply completing a puzzle each one doing their part to fill in the necessary pieces, some of us can already make out what that puzzle looks like and do not like the image.
