I've often had discussions on political issues where people had strong opinions but little understanding of the actual facts. For example, I've worked with refugees and asylum seekers in the UK in a quasi-legal context, so know more about refugee law in the UK than most. I was reading comments on an online newspaper article today which demonstrated a lack of general knowledge on issues such as immigration, like:
- What is a "refugee"? We can't just accept any person who might get beaten up.
- How do we know he's telling the truth about being tortured? Why should we believe him?
- Why do all refugees come here (to the UK)?
And so on, when each of these questions has a defined, legal answer, or is inaccurate.
And if it is inaccessible, how can that be changed?
