Women's Rights, the Olympics, and Islam -

This morning, I was watching the women's 100M Prelims, and it is truly amazing to see how fast these young women can run. Most of the automatic qualifiers for the races this evening (the top 2 finishers of each heat) were running the 100M in less than 12 seconds.
But, what struck me as interesting wasn't the speed of the winners. It was the make-up of the field. Among the competitors, there were women from Iraq (she finished her heat second and under 12 seconds), from Qatar, from Libya, and from Afghanistan. Most of these women were even that competitive, the woman from from Qatar didn't finish and the woman from Afghanistan finished last in her heat. Both the woman from Qatar and Afghanistan wore clothes that covered their entire bodies with the exception of their hands and faces.
I guess my question is this. Do you think this is symbolic of change in a positive direction for some of these Islamic nations? If so, what do think is bringing about this change? If not, what do you really think is going on?

I do think things are improving. In Saudi Arabia women (who are treated like small children) now outnumber men in universities. I'd say that's a good thing. I don't know enough about why these changes are occurring. What are the reasons women gained more rights in places like Europe and the US? Could be some of the very same things at play.

Meh. It's just a publicity stunt mostly. There is a Saudi young lady, Sarah Attar, entered in the 800 meters. Her father is Saudi, her mother American. However, she was born and raised in America and currently attends Pepperdine University. I wonder if Attar has ever even visited Saudi Arabia? Her personal best in the 800 meters is 2:40. That time wouldn't win a 7th grade girls race, let along hang with world class runners. I think Saudi Arabia is allowing this so they can look good. What they don't want is a bonafide world class female runner in the Olympics. Can you imagine if a legit Saudi born and raised female would actually qualify for the 800 meter finals? It would be HUGE news. The Saudis know Attar will not make it out of her 1st round heat so they let her run so they can claim t here are making progress with women's rights.

No! This is not being in fellowship with God. These man-made, handmade religions will suffer in later times, until they come to know God, or parish into the abyss, hell.

I can’t stand those oppressive skunks! I wish we could take over Saudi Arabia, set the women free, and castrate the men with their dirks, then breed them out. It is not aggression from Russia we have to worry ourselves with, but relations with China. This is another task for me, I realise it, but I find it so tasking?
