because I don't think that is how political labels can work. It's a sliding scale. The last Tsar of Russia believed in a state owned military, but that doesn't mean he was partly a communist. political labels are based on overall attitudes not just one. Otherwise you could say that almost every political leader is both communist and libertarian to some extent

Communist? Maybe not. But my argument is that if you believe that the state should manage certain publicly-funded instutions for the good of the people, that's socialistic thinking. Else, what exactly is socialism, according to you? Of course, one could assert in the case of the Tsar the good of the people wasn't really the idea and it was just tyranny rather than socialism.

That depends on your definition of communism and whether you believe that belief in the abolition of all private property is necessary to constitute communism. If you ask me, most liberals (according to the European definition) and libertarians do support socialism to varying degrees (but are far from actually being communists.) Which is why it's silly for a lot of people to act like socialism is such a foreign, evil thing the way they do.
