[RNC Chair wants Akin to 'step aside' and not come to convention by Kerry Picket - The Washington Times] "Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus appeared on CNN's Out Front on Monday evening and spoke to Erin Burnett about the controversial statements made by Rep. Todd Akins, Missouri Republican, regarding rape. He called for Mr. Akin, who is running for Senate against Democrat Claire McCaskill, to "step aside and let someone else run for that office." Chairman Priebus also said that he "prefer that Todd Akin do the right thing for our party and our candidates" and "not come" to the upcoming RNC Convention in Tampa..." The problem is the guy basically stated that rape, if it is "legitimate", will not result in pregnancy. Thus, according to this logic, if you get pregnant you were not really raped...
If Akin would have simply stated that he opposed abortion under all/almost all circumstances, then people would have grumbled and "outraged" as some always do, but there wouldn't be near the response he has to deal with now.

Looks as though Todd is going to stay:
MIssouri’s §115.359 appears to require a candidate to withdraw “no later than the eleventh Tuesday prior to the general election” — which, if you’re counting, is this Tuesday. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/0...in-to-withdraw

I think the constituent base that Mr. Akin has in his area surrounding Saint Louis will support him. There is a lot of ill sentiment towards things the Dems have done in Missouri and knowing what area Mr. Akin comes from and represents....I do not think the locals will drink up all the koolaid "controversey". Akin is by no means a rocket scientist but he is certainly a better choice any day over Claire McCaskill.

She seemed taken aback when the RePublicans threw him under the bus. I think for a moment she actually believed that they wanted to protect children. Eze 18:20
very sensitive subject matter.
Are there cases of statutory rape, where it is a matter of teenagers having sex, with one of them being under age, and both are consenting - is this the same as forcible rape?
Are there women who would claim they were raped in order to receive free abort services - shock, some women lied about being raped.
The term legitimate (forcible rape), is where fained outrage for political purposes comes into play, Akin misspoke, trying to make a point, and did it rather clumsily.

In the sense that pornographic literature is worded badly. Some things just can't be worded any other way.
The 65-year-old lawmaker [Akin] replied: "It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, that is really rare.
"If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

"Pregnancy and rape
There are more than 32,000 pregnancies from rape each year, the Centers for Disease Control says
A woman who has been raped "has no control over ovulation, fertilization or implantation of a fertilized egg (pregnancy)," says the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists
The same group says that annually, between 10,000 and 15,000 abortions take place as a result of incest or rape"
