Interesting. Do you have any statistics as to the rates of violence for those on any of thes drugs, compared to their untreated cohorts?
If you're on to something, some people have a lot of explaining to do.
Tell us about it.
Edit:
Apparently so, at least for certain conditions.
Suicidality, violence and mania caused by
selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors
(SSRIs): A review and analysis ∗
Peter R. Breggin
101 East State Street, No. 112, Ithaca, NY 14850, USA
Abstract. Evidence from many sources confirms that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) commonly cause or exacerbate
a wide range of abnormal mental and behavioral conditions. These adverse drug reactions include the following
overlapping clinical phenomena: a stimulant profile that ranges from mild agitation to manic psychoses, agitated depression,
obsessive preoccupations that are alien or uncharacteristic of the individual, and akathisia. Each of these reactions can worsen
the individual’s mental condition and can result in suicidality, violence, and other forms of extreme abnormal behavior. Evidence
for these reactions is found in clinical reports, controlled clinical trials, and epidemiological studies in children and
adults. Recognition of these adverse drug reactions and withdrawal from the offending drugs can prevent misdiagnosis and the
worsening of potentially severe iatrogenic disorders. These findings also have forensic application in criminal, malpractice, and
product liability cases.

So Prozac seems to pose a significant risk in causing violent behavior in those with certain mental conditions. I don't see that any information to physician currently specifies these issues. Given the large number of people on them, severe events seem rather rare. But still, it's an easily addressable concern.

To my mind it is wholly irresponsible to go into the world incapable of preventing violence, injury, crime, and death. How feeble is the mindset to accept defenselessness. How unnatural. How cheap. How cowardly. How pathetic.

At the age of 50, it became necessary for my wife and I to move to another state because of a job change. When I found a new primary care physician, she didn't want me on the medicine I had been on for 6 years for chest pains from anxiety. So she first prescribed me Buspar. One pill later, I was on the floor with severe vertigo. Next, she prescribed me Klonopin. This worked for the anxiety, but I had a hard time maintaining my balance when walking. Falling into a parallel wall is hard to explain. Fortunately, no one noticed. Next, she prescribed me Zoloft. No balance problems, but I talked and acted like I was on speed. I then changed doctors and she put me back on the medicine my first doctor had me on 6 years earlier. It works with no side effects.
Thank God for the Internet and the information provided by sites like WebMD on pharmaceuticals. One thing that was especially important to me, as a Mechanical Design Engineer, is I cannot take anything that is going to impair my judgment doing my job or effect my ability to continue learning. To be a successful engineer, you really need to continue learning your whole life.
Another thing I found interesting and you may have noticed it too. At lunch time, you'll often see lunches being provided by pharmaceutical sales people, usually very attractive women, who would be handing out all kinds of free samples as well as providing lunch. I would hope doctors and their staff are not swayed by this, but who knows?
It's hard that we really understand so little about psychological conditions, how the brain works chemically, and how to treat it. And it's a shame that so many medications that can help people are overprescribed.

So, that comes to about 40 out of 30,000,000 as far as people being on anti-depressants in the US?
I mean, it seems quite a list, until you look at the real numbers. Over 1 in 10 people in the US take anti-depressants.
I think anti-depressants are over-prescribed and under-monitored. But really, those lists of people who have "freaked out" on them is actually very low, percentage-wise.

Yup, list like this are high on assumptions and false inference.
For example, we can make a similar list of nut-jobs who went on killing sprees and were NOT on medication, and infer that had they used meds, lives would have been saved.
In the grand scheme of things, I think they have a very strong net positive effect, especially when prescribed and used correctly.

DID YOU KNOW… that psychotropic or psychiatric drugs used to “treat” mental illnesses can alter your normal brain function? These drugs can interfere with your neurotransmitters and disrupt the delicate processes in your brain. Taking them may induce side effects similar to those of mental disorders. Another Stunning Victory for the Psychiatry Profession
Posted by Ryan W. McMaken on August 1, 2012 09:18 AM
A few days into the investigation it was revealed that the suspected Batman Movie Killer was under a psychiatrist's care at the University of Colorado where he was treated with who-knows-what mind-altering medications.
We also later learned that the alleged killer had sent that doctor, Lynne Fenton, a package by the suspected killer detailing some of his murderous plans. FoxNews asks "What did she know, and when?"
We later learned that Fenton had been reprimanded by the University in 2005 for unknown (at this time) reasons, and that she nevertheless was made an assistant professor and medical director of the university's student mental health service.
Following these revelations, the University of Colorado went into CYA mode, and has lucked out now that the judge in the case has ruled that the University is exempt from open-records laws on matters related to the killings.
Now, we find that the court records have been altered to remove mention of the alleged killer's involvement with the psychiatrist. According to the Denver Post:
The motion by defense attorneys, originally released Friday, was altered to black out a section that revealed Holmes was a patient of University of Colorado psychiatrist Dr. Lynne Fenton.
I hate to break it to the peeps, but your chances of being killed or wounded in a terrorist incident are so close to zero that they might as well be zero. Worry far more about slipping in the tub.
