Smile Left or Right? - August 21st, 2006, 09:55 PM

I've noticed that a lot of folks on TOL have selected "More right than left" or "More left than right" as their political leaning. This indicates either a lack of information, or simply unwillingness to subscribe fully to a particular worldview. I therefore have developed the following table to help everyone accurately determine whether they are in fact Right or Left, with no room in between.

LEFT / RIGHT
Pro-choice / Pro-life, anti-abortion, no exceptions ever
Government sponsored social programs / Private charity
Evolution / Creation
"Big bang" or eternal universe / Creation
Atheist,Agnostic,Polytheistic / Monotheistic
Condones Homosexuality / Actively opposes homosexuality
Condones Fornication or Adultery / Actively opposes fornication and adultery
Gun bans or gun control / Unrestricted firearms ownership and carrying
Public skool / Home school or Private school
High taxes (above 5%) / Just taxes (5% and below)
Opposes death penalty / Death penalty for all capital crimes without exception
Treaties, International Bodies / Independent sovereign nations
Dumocracy or Republic / Constitutional Monarchy
Trial by Jury / Trial by Judge
Any way / Jesus is the only Way

By now there should be no question as to whether you are "Left of Satan" or a "Right Wing Zealot" (like myself ). Update your profile accordingly.

New choice instead of lack of information or a non clear worldview!

Lets go with...left on some...right on other...with...in my case...right being on top!

Hence:

More right than left!!

**CONFETTI!!!**

on a more serious note, evolution and creation and stuff like that are not political matters. They are views generally taken by people based on the religious afiliation or lack thereof which then go on to influence their political views. These would only apply in the case of whether or not they think creation should be taught in schools. Odds are (hopefully) that you'll never hear 'I'm voting for so-and-so because he believes in evolution...'

I considered addressing this dilemma. Now I will.

EITHER if you are Left on more than three issues OR if you are left on abortion, religion, or sex, you are definitely Far Left Wing!

I'm not pro-life -- I'm anti-abortion. I just thought I'd point that out.

Good point. I'm not strictly pro-life in the Catholic sense

Thanks for clarifying that. I've always been pro-innocent life because I support war and death penalty.

Pro-choice / Pro-life, anti-abortion, no exceptions ever - absolutely, and this is the one thing that keeps me voting Republican despite the fact that I can't stand the party.

Government sponsored social programs / Private charity - I am a socialist, but that doesn't mean I am against private charity, I support that as well.

Evolution / Creation - Duh

"Big bang" or eternal universe / Creation - this is only a repeat of the above really ...

Atheist,Agnostic,Polytheistic / Monotheistic - this is not a dividing line between political right and left, and is therefore wrongly put in this list

Condones Homosexuality / Actively opposes homosexuality - I will not vote for this one, because I am both. Homosexuality is absolutely sinful and to compromise that is to be Biblicallly illiterate. However I do not believe we should legislate Christianity and therefore I support gay marriage.

Condones Fornication or Adultery / Actively opposes fornication and adultery - obviously I oppose it, but what do you mean by this choice?

Gun bans or gun control / Unrestricted firearms ownership and carrying

Public skool / Home school or Private school - Both.

High taxes (above 5%) / Just taxes (5% and below) - I am a socialist. And I've never heard ANYONE propose a 5% tax level, that is a stupid dividing line. If we paid for nothing but the military a 5% flat tax would not cover the costs of it.

Opposes death penalty / Death penalty for all capital crimes without exception - and for some crimes not currently considered capital crimes

Treaties, International Bodies / Independent sovereign nations - both, though much more of an independent.

Dumocracy or Republic / Constitutional Monarchy

Trial by Jury / Trial by Judge

Any way / Jesus is the only Way

I don't need a table to tell me what I already know...

I do wish Knight or someone would add "libertarian" as it would be more accurate. Ah well.

Your test is quite slanted towards Christian conservative, or more accurately, theonomist views. I'm sure you did that on purpose because you seem like an intelligent guy. Just thought I'd point that out for anyone who didn't catch it.

How about a more objective indicator of whether we're conservative ("right") or liberal ("left")? Someone once posted an online questionnaire to see what you are politically. As I recall, it was sort of slanted with libertarian questions, but it seemed to be more objective than yours. Anyone have that link?

Your contention that somehow it's not possible to be "in the middle" is just wrong. I'm liberal on most things, but conservative on others. If I was totally left-wing, I'd say so. Also, I was under the impression that the question of "left or right" in the profile was a political question. Your "Any way / Jesus is the only Way" dichotomy is clearly not a political question, but a religious one - because I know some Jews who are very conservative, both socially and politically. The only people who consider that a political question are theonomists, which, clearly, you are.

Pro-choice / Pro-life, anti-abortion, no exceptions ever: Pro-life, only exception being saving the mother's life, and that's so rare it barely counts these days

Government sponsored social programs / Private charity: Private charity's ideal, no hand outs

Evolution / Creation: Evolution

"Big bang" or eternal universe / Creation: See above

Atheist,Agnostic,Polytheistic / Monotheistic: Atheist

Condones Homosexuality / Actively opposes homosexuality: Between adults, it's fine by me

Condones Fornication or Adultery / Actively opposes fornication and adultery: What's this "fornication" nonsense? Adultery ain't cool, FYI

Gun bans or gun control / Unrestricted firearms ownership and carrying: The only restriction should be age, which I'd put at eighteen--after that, fire away

Public skool / Home school or Private school: Actually I'd prefer to home school my kids

High taxes (above 5%) / Just taxes (5% and below): Any tax rate beyond what is needed for the bare necessities is theft

Opposes death penalty / Death penalty for all capital crimes without exception: Define "capital" crime

Treaties, International Bodies / Independent sovereign nations: Both have their place

Dumocracy or Republic / Constitutional Monarchy: How stupendously clever--a constitutional republic would be acceptable as would a benign dictatorship

Trial by Jury / Trial by Judge: Jury

Any way / Jesus is the only Way: My way

Theocrats are Social Darwinists.

Even notice how the pro-monarchy yahoos insist that they're for a constitutional monarchy?

Now, the default monarchic model around here is the Enyartite Monarchy, which is a constitutional monarchy in name only: in practice it is an absolute monarchy, because the monarch is accountable only to God. Given how seldom the local deity deigns to muck about in human affairs, this means that, in practice, the monarch is answerable to no one.

Just thought I'd point that out. Again.
