I was thinking a comparison more along the lines of Mao Tse-tung or Joseph Stalin, actually.
Now you’re talking football!

MJ won 6. Favre won 1. Yes, he is the face of the franchise. Yes, he is a true iron man and he holds quite a few records in the record book. But there is truly no comparison between MJ and Favre.
Are you under the impression that I started the Favre/MJ comparison?
Quote:
If Favre expects respect from the team, shouldn't he show the team respect by not jerking them around for two straight off-seasons?
Yeah! Unlike his fellow players, who show up to play with or without a finished contract and never gripe or get arrested or... Of all the things to criticize players over, the desire to play and/or the legitimate consideration regarding whether or not they can give to their team the level of commitment and excellence they feel is warranted is hardly one of them…
Quote:
The Packers are still an extraordinarily young team, and are only one/two years removed from the terrible seasons. The team surely did not mature overnight.
Tell that to the Cowboy dynasty. And how dominant were the Patriots until they were? So either the Packers got better and Favre had a banner year or Favre lifted them on his nearly MVP shoulders. Either way, it doesn’t much help your case.

You still don't fully understand the other side of the argument.
If by "don't understand" you mean don’t find it rational, yes, you’re right.
Quote:
Those of us who think Favre should retire or be traded aren't saying this because we don't think Favre is a great player. He is one of the all-time greats. He had one of his absolute best seasons last year. If I were personally given the choice between Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, of course I would take Favre!
Then you should be running the Green Bay organization.
Quote:
But the Packer organization has repeatedly been jerked around by the "great one".
Really? You're fired.
Jerked around to what effect? Again, teams are in the business of winning. How many teams would have loved to have been jerked around if it led to a deep playoff berth and a shot at the title? I’m just not that concerned about the emotional well being of the suits and the team seems to have rebounded nicely from any distraction his decisions in the past might have caused.
Quote:
He's a great player, no doubt, but this is no longer about on field skill. This is about one man toying with an entire organization for two straight years because he wasn't able to fully think through a decision [actually, two of them] before he made it, and the repercussions that such an on-again, off-again relationship will inevitably have.
Toying? Yeah. I don’t know how many times I’ve toyed with an answer of moment…you keep adding an emotional element that doesn’t appear to impact the point of team play, which is on the field accomplishment. If the general manager is too stressed by Favre’s distraction he can always become a vendor…if it diminishes your enjoyment of a great game, take up knitting.
Quote:
You realize that Favre is the Packers' best bet for the upcoming season and want to dismiss any consideration of his off-season antics.
Any that won’t impact the game itself or the W/L? Sure. But don’t be confused. I don’t give a royal fig about the Green Bay Packers. I bleed Colt blue. But I admire a great player and call most of what you’re putting out there against him what it is: emotion laden, personal affront. There’s just no rational argument for not immediately installing Favre in the position to give his team the best chance to win. That’s why they play the game.
Quote:
I realize that Favre is the Packers' best bet for the upcoming season but realize that his disrespectful treatment of the Packers organization [Great Van Susteren, anyone?] has rightfully left them with a bad taste in their mouth. What will happen? If I had to guess, Favre will be traded within the next few days. Time will tell.
Disrespectful? He had the nerve (over the last few years) to seriously consider if he could give them his best. And then he had the gall to reconsider and offer his services for another season…what hubris. :squint:
So it appears Favre's out at Green Bay? Coach McCarthy says for Brett to get on the train because it's moving on down the tracks. Favre says the Pack have lost that loving feeling. I don't know guys . Somethings going on that the rest of us "armchair" gm's don't know about. Mariucci told Favre he needs to get to working out, and what does Favre say? What am I suppose to do, run down the streets of Green Bay like Rocky with the kids following behind? Somethings going on up there in Green Bay. Don't drink the water in Milwaukee and trade Favre to the Jets. Problem solved.

I completely agree. There is a reason why McCarthy, the Packers organization and Favre have been so cryptic while speaking about the situation. They know things that we don't know, and may never find out. The situation obviously runs much deeper than a change of mind and new direction.

Immediate reaction: Why the heck didn't he push for the Bucs? The Bucs are already a playoff contender, and very likely could have been put over the top with the addition of Favre. I seriously doubt they would have won a Super Bowl, but at least they would be competitive [especially considering the weakness of the division].
But then again, after taking a glance at the Jets' schedule, I wouldn't be surprised if they end up with an 8-8 or 9-7 record. Will they make the playoffs? I doubt it. The AFC is too strong. The Patriots, Colts, Chargers, and Steelers are practically shoe-ins. The Jags are beginning to look dominant, and the Titans seem to be on the rise [and I surely wouldn't want to mess with Haynesworth!]. Anyway, I don't see a playoff birth in Favre's horizon, but I think he may have a decent season...well, as long as Chad Pennington doesn't steal the job away from him.

I'm starting to think Brett Favre just wants to be on camera. I mean, the Jets are the most videotaped team in the league. Just ask some of Bill Belichick's former employees.
Immediate reaction: Why the heck didn't he push for the Bucs?
Why would any reasonable sports fan think that the Packer organization is going to listen to Favre? Strike that...why would YOU think that? The only thing Favre can do is fail to show up if he doesn't want to play for the Jets. As to GB's reasoning, the Jets offering a fourth round conditional pick that, depending on Favre's play, could advance as high as a first round pick, and the fact that the Pack doesn't have to see them and run into the dreaded revenge game (a-la Steve Young visiting Arrowhead) hit the very spot.
The Bucs were never going to be in the running.

I agree it would have been a great fit, but the front office wouldn't commit the resources required to stay in the bidding war and Green Bay really didn't want to see Favre anywhere near the NFC if another option presented itself. Rumor has it that Tampa was offering the same sort of 7th round nonsense that got them Garcia. That wasn't going to be enough.

Given the improvement on the offensive line...if they can establish a running game with Favre under center then who knows? Not many were touting the crew Favre almost took to the SB last year until after the fact...We'll see who made who what, won't we?
Oh, and in light of your comments in the above quote I've omitted the entirety of your AFC analysis... Pennington counts 6 million against the cap. There isn't any chance the Jets keep him on the roster given their cap situation and Favre's salary...geeze. And Pennington doesn't have the arm strength to knock Favre off anything if he stayed around.

Hence the smiley.
You should really sharpen your sense for irony.

My opinion: Green Bay would not consider seriously any trade to Tampa. Gruden and Childress are from the same Holmgren braintrust that Brett wanted to relive (a super bowl).
The possibility of a trade from Tampa to Minnesota out of spite would be too great a temptation. Hence Jets.
On the running game possibility for the Jets: if Thomas Jones can reestablish himself as a determined runner, a lot of things are possible. Blocking will be the indicator.
edit: whether Favre shows to Jets camp is an entirely different can of worms.
