hermaphrodites -

I know this is another issue but I've struggled with the plight of hermaphrodites.
Where do they stand in religious circles? This is a serious question. I haven't discussed this with anyone yet.... my pastor or anyone.
Do they get to choose what sex they are? Or should religious people choose based on their looks?
I can't help but think (from experiences I've witnessed in my life) that many of the gay men were effeminate from the beginning and there is some kind of error chemically or something that makes them gay.
I mean, before it became fashionable to be gay, there were gay men or women and I can't imagine someone choosing to have to hide the way they did and not only that, as homophobic as most men are I can't see them faking being gay.
From a biological standpoint, they're either XX or XY, so genetically they're either male or female, not something in between. And of course it's possible that they're affected and have XXY (genetically still male) or XXX, and whatnot. I'd imagine that the chances of that are exceedingly slim.

You don't know what you are talking about. True hermaphrodites are (XX)(XY) rare but factual.
XXY males are rather common and not generally homosexual
If you're born with no legs it doesn't excuse you from having to abide by God's rules. If they do what is right then it will be well with them.
Yes, scripture says eunuchs’ born or made are able to achieve salvation by coming to Christ, just as we all are able to do, should we have faith in Him who opens the door

What rule are you speaking of? I'm talking about which sex they should pick and what criteria should they use?

Your OP asked where they stand religiously. From a Christian standpoint as long as they heed the Word of God they stand in the right place regardless of the physical issues they have.
It's possible for a person to become two people and for two people to become one. Each individual is still answerable to God according to his words and actions. Why should it be different for a hermaphrodite?

Stick to what you know.
My reference to Klinefelter's was saying that it would be possible to have an XXY hermaphrodite, HOWEVER, I never made the statement that the XXY karyotype was the cause of the apparent hermaphroditism (and isn't).
Historically the term hermaphrodite has been used to describe individuals with mixed genitals. I'd venture to say that 99% of hermaphrodites encountered, if not more, are biologically XX or XY and have had problems in embryological development. Are you familiar with Mullerian ducts and Wolffian ducts, or perhaps you would know them by the terms mesonephric and paramesonephric ducts? If not, understanding them and their future development explains a lot in this area.
I will grant you that it is possible, and as you've said, extremely rare, to encounter an XX/XY individual. However, I think that this is such a small part of the population, and relative to what the OP said, that the point is moot. The majority of "hermaphrodites" encountered in society are either XX or XY, but not both. If we're going to continue this discussion from a biological standpoint, I'd assume we should use the terms hermaphrodite (XX/XY individuals) and the much more commonly encountered pseudohermaphrodite (XX or XY individuals).
"Babies that are born with both male and female sexual organs, or characteristics of both organs, are called hermaphrodites or intersex. A child who is in an intersexual state is classified in one of three categories: 1) true hermaphrodite – an infant born with both ovaries and testicles and has both male and female sex organs. 2) female pseudohermaphrodite – a genetic female with male external sex organs. 3) male pseudohermaphrodite – a genetic male with external sex organs that fail to develop properly, resulting in female or male/female physical characteristics.
In times past, doctors would perform surgeries without first testing the infant to find out its true sex, and the child would sometimes grow up very obviously a man, with female genitalia. Now, specialists can perform an ultrasound, blood test, chromosome analysis, and even do exploratory surgery to find out the baby's true sex..." The truth is right in front of you. Homosexuality is for most homosexuals, a part of their genetic blueprint, just as a hermaphrodite is the physical expression of such genetic gender confusion. The truth is that the genetic machinery that defines individual human beings is complicated, and it doesn't always result in the obvious gender delineations that people thousands of years ago imagined to be God's will.
It seems to me that it's ALL God's will. Including the genetic trait of homosexuality, or the occurrences of hermaphrodites. So the question is, why would God allow such genetic anomalies to occur, and then declare them unacceptable? Or could it perhaps be, that it's we who have decided they are unacceptable, and then projected our own opinions onto God?
You can choose to believe whatever you want. But I choose to believe that God loves and accepts everyone, regardless of their genetic peculiarities. And I also choose to believe that God accepts everyone regardless of these as well, because of that love. And the only thing that truly separates us from God is our wanting to be thusly separated. Because that's how real love works. Real love does not force the beloved to respond in kind. Nor does it condemn the beloved for their rejection. Real love is unconditional. Real love remains true regardless.
Generally, I believe it a bad idea to dig up old threads because
1) Hard to discover the original posters needs/intent
2) Other than this thread, they usually drag bandwidth due to length
3) Because the passion of the OP poster's absense, these die again rather quickly
My answer: As with any deformity, we deal with these on a case by case basis and we are talking about a vastly (hugely) small population.
As with others, they have viable spiritual, social, as well as medical options and limitations.
Now to Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,
to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, forever. Amen. -Ephesians 3:20 & 21
1Co 13:11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. But when I became an adult, I set aside childish ways. - Let's at least work at it?
