I think there ought to be a line in every city where average citizens can call and nominate a bad driver (by license plate number) to have his car confiscated, and sold at auction with the proceeds to be applied to lowering property taxes. Each nomination doubles as a vote and once per week or month, the plate number that comes up the most number of times is selected as the winner(?) and their license is revoked and their car impounded for auction.
I'm betting the skill level of the average driver would increase appreciably.

Sure! And maybe we could call social services on people who buy one ply toilet paper, too! That's that we need!

Either that or the grumpy neighbours and unpopular bosses would be hot-footing it around and not at all appreciating their lower property taxes...

Or a group of people could set out to screw over somebody they didn't like...

Can we extend that ban to all motor vehicles? And if a accident results, both driving and cell phone privelidges should be permanently revoked AND the victim (should they survive) should be given 5 minutes to do what ever they please to the driver.
Seriously.
Twice I have been hit while riding my bicycle to or from work. Both times the driver was on a cell phone. Should it happen again, I'm beating the driver into a bloody mess with their cell. I'm sure it will make the news.
I'm not from the US so I don't know if my opinion counts. Where I'm from traffic rules are more of a suggestion. It's really hard to text while driving, even if you're driving really slow. But some of the people here can compose a text message without looking at their phones so I guess they find it easy. All in all, it really should be banned because you're attention should be on the road.

Are you sure they weren't just using the cell as an excuse?

To my mind it is wholly irresponsible to go into the world incapable of preventing violence, injury, crime, and death. How feeble is the mindset to accept defenselessness. How unnatural. How cheap. How cowardly. How pathetic.

As a former trucker (Central Refrigerated) and bus driver (MIDCO/ Western States), I can say that this ban had been in effect for us for quite some time, with or without Federal decision making.
It is absolutely ludicrous for a driver (any driver!) to be texting or even using the phone without a headset while driving.
YES, I wholeheartedly support this move. I would also support this move to cover all drivers.
What idiot thought that ONLY truck and bus drivers (most of whom are the best drivers on the road) should be banned from texting while driving?

By ticketing people for not giving turn signals, following too closely, driving left-of-center, driving too slow or too fast and for driving with flat or near-flat tires (for starters).
