Total agreement ... self-help is promoted by good psychologists and the psychologists I saw aided me with their professional abilities and they promoted reading specific books which would enable self-help also.
Good psychologists...that is the key. I have seen people I know struggle to find a good one, it can be difficult.
I've also seen ones I care about struggle with one thing after another - enough disappointment, bad luck, tragedy, and depression, to wear down the most saintly of saints, just trying to keep their heads above water. Enough to drive them to despair, and test their faith. And I think, why them, Lord? Can You not now give them rest? I pray the Psalms of lament for them and wonder when will He lift them out of the pit. So it is hard for those who look on, helpless.

Part of believing that "He exists" is giving proper reverence to His Name, and OBEYING WHAT HE SAID. If we did that, we would not have gotten neither the diseases of the Gentiles, NOR THE ONES TO COME! And get your annointing oil from Israel, just like we are supposed to seek from the Jews in this last day also. If you got no one around that believes with strength, then Ask the Father, Yahu'Shua will sen, the Comforter, and that Comforter will TEACH you what you must know and do, and will write it upon your heart, and when you pray, TELL HIM YOU DON'T KNOW and ask the Comforter (Ruach ha Kodesh) to give to you what you should pray. Then get on your knees and pour your heart out to YAHUWEH and Yahu'Shua will "intercede". Humbling yourself and going through your own life and how it has gone against YAHUWEH'S WILL, and repenting of it, then "bring forth fruits meet for repentance" (that ain't hard) once you get down there at this point. Don't try to make any deals, just simply be real, really repent, and then submit your petittion, USE HIS WORDS!...WITH ALL YOUR HEART DO THIS. It is always OUR OWN WORDS that condemn us, USE HIS, and be in agreement, AND BELIEF!
FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS YAHUWEH GAVE TO ALL WHO WORSHIP HIM! And Yahuweh will show YOU what is what! Here are two Scriptures to help...
1...James 5: Come now, rich ones, weep, crying aloud over the hardships coming upon you! Your riches have rotted, and your garments have become moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have become rusty, and their rust shall be a witness against you and shall eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days. See, the wages of the workmen who mowed your fields, which you kept back, cry out. And the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of יהוה of hosts. You have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury, you have fattened your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. You have condemned, you have murdered the righteous – he does not resist you. So, brothers, be patient until the coming of the Master. See, the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. You too, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Master has drawn near. Do not grumble against each other, brothers, lest you be judged. See, the Judge is standing at the door! My brothers, as an example of suffering and patience, take the prophets, who spoke in the Name of יהוה. See, we call those blessed who endure. You have heard of the endurance of Iyoḇ and saw the purpose of יהוה, that He is very sympathetic and compassionate. But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by the heaven or by the earth or with any other oath. But let your Yes be Yes, and your No, No, lest you fall into judgment. Is any of you suffering evil? Let him pray. Is anyone in good spirits? Let him sing psalms. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, having anointed him with oil in the Name of the Master. And the prayer of the belief shall save the sick, and the Master shall raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he shall be forgiven. Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, so that you are healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous one accomplishes much. Ěliyahu was a man with feelings like us, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain. And it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the land brought forth its fruit. Brothers, if anyone among you goes astray from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the straying of his way shall save a life from death and cover a great number of sins.
2...Leviticus 26:40-46 ‘But if they confess their crookedness and the crookedness of their fathers, with their trespass in which they trespassed against Me, and that they also have walked contrary to Me, and that I also have walked contrary to them and have brought them into the land of their enemies – if their uncircumcised heart is then humbled, and they accept the punishment of their crookedness, then I shall remember My covenant with Yaʽaqoḇ, and also My covenant with Yitsḥaq, and also remember My covenant with Aḇraham, and remember the land. ‘For the land was abandoned by them, and enjoying its Sabbaths while lying waste without them, and they were paying for their crookedness, because they rejected My right-rulings and because their being loathed My laws. ‘And yet for all this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I shall not reject them, nor shall I loathe them so as to destroy them and break My covenant with them. For I am יהוה their Elohim. ‘Then I shall remember for their sake the covenant of the ancestors whom I brought out of the land of Mitsrayim before the eyes of the nations to be their Elohim. I am יהוה.’ ” These are the laws and the right-rulings and the Torot which יהוה made between Himself and the children of Yisra’ĕl on Mount Sinai by the hand of Mosheh.
I will be in agreement with you in your prayer this way.
Now...May Yahuweh bless you and keep you. May He make His Face to shine upon YOU, and give you PEACE." Hallelu Yah, Amein.
The "LAW" is Yahuweh's, it never belonged to Moses, IT WAS ALWAYS FOR YOU, not against you! They are "INSTRUCTIONS". Now you go "taste and see that Yahuweh is good!"
YeshaYahu (Isaiah) 8:20: To the Torah and to the witness! If they do not speak according to this Word, it is because they have no daybreak.
1st Kepha (Peter) 4:11: If anyone speaks, let it be as the Words of Elohim. If anyone serves, let it be as with the strength which Elohim provides, so that Elohim might be praised in it all through יהושע (Yahu'Shua) Messiah, to whom belong the esteem and the rule forever and ever. Amĕn.
I'm sorry! I wish I had good advice but truly am seeking myself for similar family issues. I will pray for you though.
walk by faith and not by sight is all I can really offer otherwise.
wish I had more to offer. God bless

Would your son be willing to try a couple of things on his own before consulting with a psychologist or psychiatrist? One is a simple dietary change that has helped many people eliminate their depression, and the other is method that will help him discover the source of the problem and correct it through faith.
What are the symptoms? What seems to be the cause?
I think he has classic depression symptoms. Used to have some obsessive-compulsive issues, but they are now minimal. He went through a time away from God into sin, drinking, etc. that may have opened the doors to depression/oppression. When he returned to the faith, he did so with zeal, and may have picked up misconceptions about God, himself, etc. He also possibly 'burned out' in his new zeal to help others who had problems, etc.
Indecisiveness, inability to think, sadness/lack of joy, eating too much (now is more self-controlled and healthy vs sugar), mind darkness/pain, etc. are part of it.

When awaiting God's miracles, always remember the old joke:
Quote:
There once was a flood and everyone had reached safety except for one man.
He climbed to the top of his house with the water lapping at his feet.
A helicopter flew over his head and hung down a rope for him to climb, but the man was deeply religious and said, "It's alright! The Lord will save me!"
So the helicopter flew away. The water continued to rise and a boat came to him but, once again, the man shouted, "No! Go AWAY! the Lord will come and save me!" and, once again, the boat sped off.
The water was getting dangerously deep by now so the helicopter came back and, on cue, the man repeated, "I don't need saving! My Lord will come"
Reluctantly, the helicopter left.
The rain continued to pour, the water continued to rise and the man drowned.
At the gates of heaven, the man met St. Peter. Confused, he asked, "Peter, I have lived the life of a faithful man - why did my Lord not rescue me?"
St. Peter replied, "For pity sake! He sent you two helicopters and a boat!"
God works in mysterious, and often simple ways, to help us. Sometimes we overlook the simplest solutions he places right under our noses.

I was about to add to my earlier comment that God more often than not uses the person or people right in front of you to do His work.

I feel very sad for you. My oldest son has had depression for many years. We didn't know and he just tried to hide it and go on. At one point, he was outwardly very successful in his life, but he seriously considered ending his life. We never knew.
Then, he got some help. Drugs don't solve the problem; he went on the same way as he did before, but he wasn't constantly unhappy. It still bothers him. Imagine seasonal affective disorder for someone living in Seattle.
I admire his willingness to keep going forward, and wonder if I would have the character to do what he has done. Chrys has this right in his quote from Burke. Madness is uselessness. So long as one is handling it and functioning, one is the master. My son is my hero.

This sounds like what we are doing. Things like Vitamin D, Omega 3, exercise, rest, nutrition, etc. are evidence based.
Does anyone have any experience with St. John's Wort or the controversial EmPowerPlus?
The Jesus Factor (cf. drug addiction/teen challenge) is the key, in addition to practical principles.

Also, you need to watch these videos, as they are applicable to healing through faith. Later, I can share how to practically use the information in the videos to heal the psychological aspect of depression. Please let me know after you have watched them, if you would like me to share more.
