Eternal Life and Resurrection -- Including the subject of Death -

When we think about these subjects, many things come to mind.
For example, when I think about eternal life I think about death and the question of when a person begins to have eternal life. That is, does eternal life begin when a person is saved (on this earth), or does eternal life begin after a person dies in the resurrection. And, is eternal life only for believers.
When I think about resurrection I think about how both the just and the unjust, the righteous and the wicked, will be raised. I think about judgment. I think about the second death. I think about if there will be a new heaven and a new earth completely different from what we know now, or if we will go to heaven.
What about when we die? What happens then? Do we go directly to heaven to be with God and Jesus Christ? Or do we await resurrection? Is there such a thing as a general resurrection (that all will experience)?
Philippians 1:21 For to me, to live [is] Christ, and to die [is] gain.
Philippians 1:22 But if [i] live on in the flesh, this [will mean] fruit from [my] labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell.
Philippians 1:23 For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, [which is] far better.
Philippians 1:24 Nevertheless to remain in the flesh [is] more needful for you.
1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.
1 Thessalonians 4:17 Then we who are alive [and] remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.
Deuteronomy 10:12 (KJV) And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,
Deuteronomy 10:13 (KJV) To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?

Unbelievers souls go with their bodies into the graves where they suffer torment until the final resurrection.
Believers bodies sleep in their graves, but their souls are present with the Lord in heaven to await the final resurrection.

A soul is simply the life.
If they are dead then there is no life.

So are you saying that death brings a persons life closer to God?

Eternal life is only for believers, and it begins at the transformation when this mortal puts on imortality. This is the Resurrection of the righteous.
The wicked are resurrected for judgment and are cast into the lake of fire for eternal destruction.
There will be a new heaven and a new earth. God created the earth as the dwelling place for man so He could come down and be with man. God did not create heaven for man to dwell in.

Every soul will exist forever in either heaven or hell.
Saints who inherit a glorified existence in the kingdom of heaven are promised everlasting life.

You are saying Christians or believers do not go to heaven.
What did Paul mean here:
1 Thessalonians 4:17 Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.
But first here:
2 Corinthians 5:1 For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
2 Corinthians 5:2 For indeed in this house we groan, longing to be clothed with our dwelling from heaven,
2 Corinthians 5:3 inasmuch as we, having put it on, will not be found naked.
2 Corinthians 5:4 For indeed while we are in this tent, we groan, being burdened, because we do not want to be unclothed but to be clothed, so that what is mortal will be swallowed up by life.
2 Corinthians 5:5 Now He who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who gave to us the Spirit as a pledge.
2 Corinthians 5:6 Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord—
2 Corinthians 5:7 for we walk by faith, not by sight—
2 Corinthians 5:8 we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord.
2 Corinthians 5:9 Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him.

You mean personal identity is separate from the(ir) physical body.

Why would God say this--
Mat 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

A believer's bodily death brings the believer's soul into the presence of God in heaven. II Corinthians 5:1-8
Nang
So the death of a believing person brings their soul into Heaven?
2 Cor. 5 1-8 speaks of a new body given to the believer at their resurrection.
Christ returns to earth from heaven before that occurs--
Joh 14:2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
Joh 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

What do you mean by "kingdom of heaven"?

That is the Resurrection Paul is talking about.
Jesus is on His way to earth when we meet Him in the air.

The verse speaks of those who are alive will be caught up. I don't think of this as resurrection. I don't know what to think/say.
