I found an article today about a guy collecting dandelion seeds. He wanted to try pressing the oil out of them. That didn't work out as well as he hoped so he wound up sprouting them.

I have enjoyed eating dandelion greens on a tossed salad for many years, and this looks really promising to me. I think I am going to start by trying to use the first seeds I collect to try and establish a good sized stand of dandelions in one patch, to make harvesting and collecting seeds easier in the future.

Hi Delmar,

I know all this is really cool and neat so far but I'm glad to see someone has mentioned bad bacteria.

TH said I'm like Debbie Downer of SNL - and unfortunately it is kinda true!

So here is the thing: Growing your own sprouts can be a dangerous thing - right?

You know that, right? You have read up on this?

:Sprouts: What You Should Know

Like any fresh produce that is consumed raw or lightly cooked, sprouts that are served on salads, wraps, sandwiches, and Asian food may contain bacteria that can cause foodborne illness. Unlike other fresh produce, seeds and beans need warm and humid conditions to sprout and grow, and these conditions are also ideal for the growth of bacteria, including Salmonella, Listeria, and E. coli.

Rinsing sprouts first will not remove bacteria. Home-grown sprouts also present a health risk if they are eaten raw or lightly cooked.

What can consumers do to reduce the risk of illness?

Children, the elderly, pregnant women, and persons with weakened immune systems should avoid eating raw or lightly cooked sprouts of any kind (including onion, alfalfa, clover, radish, and mung bean sprouts).

Cook sprouts thoroughly to reduce the risk of illness. Cooking kills the harmful bacteria.
When you’re eating out, ask that raw sprouts not be added to your food. If you buy a ready-made sandwich, salad, or Asian food, check to make sure raw sprouts have not been added

I'm sorry.

If you will pardon me for saying Steaming is for you.
And Stir Frying. Wouldn't steamed or stir fried sprouts be good?

And actually tofu and the other forms of those processed wonders from ancient times may be better for you than just soybeans, isn't that incredible to think about? I mean if you are going to eat a lot repeatedly.

You can still go healthier right?

Have you tried wheatberries?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheatberry

Quote:
http://www.eatingwell.com/recipes/co...t_berries.html

Contrary to popular belief, wheat berries do not require an overnight soak before cooking. Simply boil them for 1 hour to soften the kernels, which will produce their characteristically chewy texture.

READER'S COMMENT:
"I cook this in a black and decker steamer (2.5 cups wheat berries and fill the bowl with water to the top). I don't add salt or broth re: sodium. I turn on the steamer for 75 minutes and it cooks like rice, comes out perfectly, not mushy...
Quote:
Why are wheat berries “Healthy Eats”?
Since the wheat kernel is left intact, virtually none of the nutrients are stripped away. A cup of cooked wheat berries has about 300 calories and is packed with fiber, protein and iron. Tasty sprouts are loaded with vitamin E, a cell-protecting antioxidant, and magnesium, which is good for healthy bones and muscles.

ps I've always wanted to try Kefir and Quinoa
and even Amazake!

I have never heard anyone suggest that wheatberries are more nutritious than sprouted wheat, or wheat grass. I have sprouted wheat, oats, and corn, but have yet to find a good inexpensive source for wheat and oats that are good for sprouting.

rainee
One of the articles you linked to (I have not read them all yet) did give me some very practical ways to maximize food safety. I talked about the problem of not knowing how the seeds were handled., Were they exposed to uncomposted manure, for example. This tells me I am on the right track with collecting seeds from my own garden. I also did not know it was possible to soak seeds in a bleach solution before sprouting without stunting germination. Sanitized seeds + sterile jars + clean water = low risk for contamination.

Hi Delmar,
I see you and I are off to a great start here, lol!
Hope you are doing great t match your spirit!

Del, I do not drink raw milk but honestly I would have to search high and low to find some anyway.

But I love fresh, ice cold, raw beef.
How does that sound to you?

A sweet older lady I called an aunt gave me some fresh ice cold salmon steaks (2) when I lived in Oregon and she gave me instructions on how to cook them.

But when I took them out of the package once in my kitchen and smelled them?

They smelled so fresh I had to eat one raw right then and there. And I ate the other one raw later. (I was too embarrassed to tell her I never tried her recipe.)

But that did not make me a healthier eater just cuz I ate raw meat, did it? Nope, in fact I had to stop for danger to health reasons!

So steaming is not for you?

Quote:
Yuk!
Lol, ok, but maybe you can develop some things you like? Maybe?
Keep an open mind!

AS far as juicing fruits and veggies goes, or even juicing grasses like wheat grass - please enjoy with care and cleanliness. Grasses should require sunshine - and bacteria hate that, right?

BUT when you speak of health in sprouts?
I read in one of those I gave you that the increased nutrients listed for sprouts come from being compared to the seed.
Which is kind of interesting in itself, if you think about it. Right?

Do you think wheat and oats (and corn) become less healthy as they grow up from sprouts?

BTW I knew a guy who went out into his garden and often ate his corn raw from the stalk...

I use a couple of drops of food grade hydrogen peroxide when I soak my sprouts.

Also, I don't sprout in mason jars but in linen bags, which is much better. You can buy sprout bags online or make your own as I did.

I recommend the book Sprout It by Steve Meyerowitz. That's where I learned my sprouting techniques.

What is better about sprouting in bags?

I just "hired" my daughter's best friend, today, to do gardening work for me. I'm going to give her $50 a month plus half of the produce of my garden to weed and water my garden for me this year. Good thing Becky loves the same vegetables I do.

That is not the issue for me. Sprouts are easy to grow indoors, all seasons of the year. Growing vegetables in the winter is complicated and expensive and requires grow lights and stuff
