Hope that one wouldn't happen, were you hoping one would, because you are who said where there is God there is hope...

These weren't my personal claims, they were stated implications of the theory investigated.

It sure was a guessing game, raised by claims posted on the internet.
It was my pleasure to scientifically investigate the claims, rather than dismiss them out of hand.

I still see no proof or disproof of the idea that effects have causes,
whether these are physical causes (mechanisms not well understood), or moral causes (judgment from God).

I also fail to see any difference between your own position and mine.
Perhaps you can explain that.

I don't believe the god in question exists, so obviously I was being sarcastic about your beliefs, a fact that I shouldn't really have to point out.

You wouldn't be American by any chance?

Can't you have life-affirming, optimistic hopes for me? Or else don't do any of this kind of hoping on my behalf. Were I to go for the option you have fallen for I would have to give up my critical faculty at the door. Then I would have to consider myself dense.

Not sure how you manage not being dense and believing in all the drivel you do.

More MegaQuakes:

I think we agreed in hindsight that quakes would have to be at least 8 on the Richter scale to be "Megaquakes".

Well we just had two more yesterday in the Indian Ocean, followed by a third smaller one in Mexico:

The stats on these are as follows:

DATE and TIME (UTC) LAT-ITUDE LONG-ITUDE MAG-NITUDE DEPTH km REGION

11-APR-2012 11:53:36 2.93 89.53 5.7 14.9 NORTH INDIAN OCEAN

And for the Mexican one:

11-APR-2012 22:55:16 18.39 -102.65 7.0 65.6 MICHOACAN, MEXICO

Both Utah and Nova Scotia are places we don't expect activity very often.

Why today's 8.6 quake didn't make a monster tsunami

The magnitude 8.6 earthquake that struck in the Indian Ocean off the western coast of Sumatra today resurrected fears of a repeat of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami that proved one of the most devastating natural disasters in modern memory.
However, this earthquake, which struck at 2:38 p.m. local time (4:38 a.m. ET), about 270 miles (435 kilometers) off the coast of the Indonesian island was a different animal altogether than the 2004 earthquake and tsunami, which killed more than 230,000 people and left millions homeless.
"It was quite a bit smaller," said Julie Dutton, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey. The 2004 quake was a magnitude 9.1 — the third most powerful earthquake ever recorded.
Perhaps more significantly, today's earthquake was a different kind of quake all together. Instead of occurring at a plate boundary along an area called a subduction zone, where one tectonic plate is diving beneath another, this earthquake occurred in the middle of an oceanic plate, where the faults in the crust essentially moved from side to side instead of up and down. These sorts of events are called strike-slip earthquakes.
"With a strike-slip event you don't have the same potential hazard for a tsunami as you do with a subduction event because the plates are moving adjacent to each other," Dutton told OurAmazingPlanet.
Although they are sometimes produced by landslides on the seafloor, significant tsunamis are typically created by subduction earthquakes, when one massive oceanic plate suddenly lurches deeper beneath another plate, shoving up a huge section of the seafloor. That displacement of the ocean floor also displaces ocean water. Essentially, the more ocean floor you move, and the more dramatically you move it, the more water you move, and the bigger the tsunami you get.
Just minutes after the earthquake struck today, the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii issued a tsunami watch for the entire Indian Ocean region.
A little more than an hour after the first and largest quake hit, the watch was still in effect, and tsunami wave heights of 1 foot were recorded in Sabang, in Indonesia's Banda Aceh province, the region that was most affected by the 2004 disaster.
The largest tsunami produced was about 3 feet (1 meter) high, according to the tsunami warning center, which has now cancelled all watches for the area.
Dutton said that it is unusual to see such a powerful earthquake in the region where today's quake struck, "but it's not unheard of," she added.
Ten Biggest quakes

The Japan Quake:

... Shown here, one of the fissures that opened up on the seafloor after the March 2011 earthquake struck off Japan's coast.

Seafloor cracks

The earthquake ruptured off the coast of Japan, below the sea floor. The force of the quake ripped open parts of the ocean floor, and pushed some sections up (the mechanism that created the tsunami).
The cracks in the seafloor, seen and studied by manned submersibles, are around 3-to-6-feet (around 1-to-3-meters) across and some 10,500-to-17,500-feet (3,200-to-5,350-meters) below the ocean's surface.

Antarctic ice stream sped up

Thousands of miles and a world away from Japan, the seismic waves of the Tohoku earthquake appeared to temporarily speed up the flow of the Whillans glacier. Glaciers are essentially rivers of ice that slowly flow, in the case of Antarctica, from the interior of the continent out to sea.
The faster pace of the Whillans glacier was detected by GPS stations located on the ice. Normally, the glacier slides only about 3 feet (1 meter) per day, but in a strong slip event, such as the one triggered by the earthquake, it can rapidly move about 1.5 feet (0.5 m).

Antarctic iceberg broken

The earthquake and its resulting tsunami were so powerful that they also broke off huge icebergs from the Sulzberger Ice Shelf in Antarctica. (An ice shelf is the part of a glacier that floats atop the sea.)
Swells of water swarmed away from the earthquake's epicenter toward an ice shelf in Antarctica, 8,000 miles (13,600 kilometers) away, and about 18 hours after the earthquake occurred, those waves broke off several chunks of ice that together equaled about two times the surface area of Manhattan. According to historical records, this particular piece of ice hadn't budged in at least 46 years before the tsunami came along.
Satellite images showed new icebergs floating off to sea shortly after the sea swell of the tsunami reached Antarctica.

Atmosphere rattled

The massive earthquake not only shook the earth, but also the atmosphere.
Research had indicated that the surface motions and tsunamis that earthquakes generate can also trigger waves in the atmosphere, and the Japan earthquake generated the largest such disturbances seen yet, creating ripples in electrically charged particles reaching nearly 220 miles (350 kilometers) above the Earth.

Gravity altered

The earthquake was so powerful that it altered the pull of gravity under the area affected by the quake.
Scientists used the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites to analyze the area's gravity field before and after the quake. The quake slightly thinned the crust, causes a slight reduction in the local gravity field.

Shortened Earth's day

An analysis conducted just days after the earthquake struck found that the temblor accelerated Earth's spin, shortening the length of the 24-hour day by 1.8 microseconds. A microsecond is a millionth of a second.
The planet's rotation sped up because the earthquake shifted the distribution of Earth's mass, said geophysicist Richard Gross at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., who made the calculation.
The scenario is similar to that of a figure skater drawing her arms inward during a spin to turn faster on the ice. The closer the mass shift during an earthquake is to the equator, the more it will speed up the spinning Earth.

were to preach any other gospel than that of
Jesus the Christ, crucified, buried, and
raised from the dead by God the Father,
to deliver us from this present evil world,
let that false preacher be accursed.' (Gal 1:1-4,8-9)

The usual pattern for true believers, once their claim doesn't work out, is to find other phenomena, and pretend that the actually predicted those, instead.

Or, in some cases, simply reclassify normal events to be unusual.

I don't know why that thought came to me just now.

God bless us, every one.
