Open rebuke is better than love carefully concealed

gp now claims that Jesus & Paul hated their neighbors
Um, no. She is quite correctly pointing out cursing somebody is not rebuking them. There is a difference between calling somebody a moron or idiot or any number of other insults. When Jesus rebuked the Pharisees by calling them hypocrites He was NOT insulting them, He was rebuking them by telling them that they were being hypocrites.
Simple insults are not rebuke.
Galatians 5:22-23 (New International Version)
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
It is saying that openly rebuking someone (in a righteous way, such as telling an adulterer that they are immoral and their actions are sin) is better than carefully concealed love (such as inwardly worrying and caring about the adulterer but saying nothing)
Quote:
2. Better in what way and to whom?
Its better for you, because you are performing actual love (love is a verb), and its better for the person you rebuke, because they are faced with the immorality of their actions. They may stifle their own conscience, but when rebuked they must face it, even if for only a moment.
Quote:
3. Why open rebuke is compared to concealed love, and not to expressed love?
Because open rebuke is expressed love, if done righteously.
Quote:
4. Is open rebuke better than open love?
No, it is open love
and
people need to be reminded of that
because
in our polite society its considered mean to point out others mistakes
but
lets not do it hypocritically. (I channeled my inner chrysostom)
"I believe in Christianity, as I believe the sun has risen, not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else." C.S. Lewis
"Don't believe that there's nothing that's true, don't believe in this modern machine." Switchfoot
I am relatively new here, but I noticed this statement on the masthead. And I found it strange, and in the end, almost incomprehensible. Can someone explain to me please:
1. What is is attempting to say?
It is a quote from scripture. Proverbs 27:5

These three questions are essentially the same: It is better to tell somebody they are headed for disaster than to quietly stand by and watch them die.

You haven't read much of the Bible have you.
Jesus called them fools, blind, blind fools, bastards, and ugly corpses on the inside. And that is just Matthew 23.

There are great spiritual dangers in this life.
Trust me, I know.
God loves His children, and He wants us to understand the Gospel.
To lovingly correct someone who is in error is not to hate them. It is to love and respect them.
We spit on the work of Christ by not doing so. We defile the sacred nature of His sacrifice by allowing people to go astray in the name of "acceptance."
To say that all know and understand the Word, rightly divided, simply because we wish to remain impartial and inclusive, is to diminish His love for us and deny His work.
We cannot do for ourselves what He has already done for us. We can, however, lovingly correct those in error. Why would we ever want to do otherwise?
We do no favors by allowing others to be led astray in the "name" of God.
We do not love by being accepting of all creeds and doctrines.
We love by being right and leading people to the truth through His guideance, His Word, and the Holy Spirit of truth.
Being right and rightly correcting are not signs of arrogance, they are signs of love.
The Lord bless you and keep you;
The Lord make His face shine upon you,
And be gracious to you;
The Lord lift up His countenance upon you,
And give you peace.

I just understand it a bit better than you. They were blind to the truth. Telling somebody the blunt truth is not an insult, its a rebuke.

When I say to the wicked, 'O wicked man, you will surely die,' and you do not speak out to dissuade him from his ways, that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood.
i don't see how a sincere Christian could not openly rebuke.....but there is a right way and a wrong way to go about it.....and on TOL imo there a many who go about it in the wrong way
Orthodoxy is just the Tyranny of the Majority, a Spiritual Despotism where accepted doctrine is Sacred, Untouchable self-evident truth no matter how absurd it may be.
