About Republicans and Abortion -

I have noticed that there are quite a few folks here on TOL that vote for republican candidates almost exclusively because they claim to be the anti-abortion candidate. And yet in all these years since Roe V. Wade they have not managed to pass any significant anti-abortion legislation. Has it occurred to anyone that if the republicans did succeed in banning abortions, that many of the people who are now voting for them purely because of this issue, would no longer have a reason to vote for them?
It seems to me that the very fact that a lot of people vote for them based on the abortion issue would be a pretty strong incentive for them to keep the abortion issue alive. To resolve it would not be in their best interest.
we vote republican to get conservatives on the court that will not find laws against abortion to be unconstitutional
and
also to destroy the democratic party that blocks them to keep abortion legal

you must be a baby killer
And you must hate America as you are actively trying to pervert it's system of government.
But that isn't the subject at hand. If stopping abortion is going to cost them all those anti-abortion votes, why would they stack the court with judges they think will actually stop abortion? Wouldn't they rather just play lip service to stopping abortion, and then appoint judges that they know won't really do it? They have a majority of conservatives on the court, now, and it hasn't happened. The conservatives on the court put Bush in office by their majority vote, they ruled to let money run our elections by their majority vote, they upheld the "corporations are people, too" law by their majority, and they may well stop "Obamacare" by their majority, and yet they have done nothing to curtail abortion. Why is that, do you think?
But you are defining what is a conservative judge by whether or not they do what you want. That's just a way of blinding yourself to the truth. By most of their decisions, the court is now a 5-4 majority of conservatives. And that same 5-4 majority has decided in favor of conservative views on many controversial cases. And yet they still have done nothing about abortion.
But you're just going to ignore the assertion, I think. I'm curious if anyone else has considered this.

Look what Bush 1 did in appointing David Souter. We're still paying for it today.

I'm not quite as cynical as you are presently...Republicans aren't going to move against the larger public opinion. Until it's a clear advantage for them they'll appease and do little. Both parties want power. Change America's mind about abortion (and I believe there's evidence that's happening) and eventually you'll shift the political advantage clearly to one side or the other. Accomplish that and you won't have to kill a party. They'll both be angling for the larger share of voters.
Ignore chrys. He's great at name calling these days but short on just about everything else. He never has owned up to supporting candidates who actually believe in abortion, if in a more limited capacity.

They'll do it when they must, and until then they'll cheat if they can. Sadly, this is how I see government in action, these days.
Abortion is legal,as it should be and MUST remain - get over it. Nobody has any right to restrict it . It's unconstitutional, immoral and dangerous to do this.
Women's lives and health are at stake.
Tough noogies, anti-choice hypocrites !

Yep. Isn't it amazing how many of those who pretend to be Christian reject this and vote Democrat?

Destroy another fetus now, we don't like children anyhow, I've seen the future baby......... It is Murder.

To my mind it is wholly irresponsible to go into the world incapable of preventing violence, injury, crime, and death. How feeble is the mindset to accept defenselessness. How unnatural. How cheap. How cowardly. How pathetic.
