Head Coverings in church, should women wear them? -
April 13th, 2012, 07:41 PM
I have wondered about this for some time now, being that I am a woman. I cant seem to come to a firm conclusion on whether we should be wearing them or not, since the passage below seems to say both yes and no to it, and after searching for answers, still get the same thing, i cant find anything that convinces me one way or the other.
If God wants us to wear them, I think we should be wearing them or not if we shouldnt be, but i would like to understand this entire passage better so im posting this thread for discussion on it.
I particularly would like to understand verse #10 about the angels, it seems out of place in the passage...
Anyway here is the entire passage on it for reference.
Thoughts?

Head Coverings
1 Corinthians 11:2 Now I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things and keep the traditions just as I delivered them to you. 3 But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head.
5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved.
6 For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered.
7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man.
8 For man is not from woman, but woman from man. 9 Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man.
10 For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.
11 Nevertheless, neither is man independent of woman, nor woman independent of man, in the Lord. 12 For as woman came from man, even so man also comes through woman; but all things are from God.
13 Judge among yourselves. Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?
14 Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him?
15 But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering.
16 But if anyone seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God.

Good question. I grew up seeing head coverings regularly in church... that were not hair (though these women did have hair on their head).
Deuteronomy 10:12 (KJV) And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,

God looks at your heart Angel, not your head covering. Your hair is covering enough. He knows you better than you know yourself.
What ever you do,do it for the lord and it will be right.

Yes, thoughts.
Could we take a closer look at context?
I Corinthians 10:33-11:16
"Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.
1Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
2Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.
3But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
4Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.
5But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.
6For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.
7For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.
8For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man.
9Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.
10For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.
11Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.
12For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.
13Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?
14Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
15But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
16But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God."
Take a look at verse 3
"But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God."
What is that verse doing there?
What is one thing a leader does for his followers?
Remember "love covers a multitude of sins"?
The leader covers for his people by loving them so as to encourage them to a more worthy endeavor.
Who is the leader of a man, (a believing man) Christ?
Did Christ cover the multitude of sins for mankind (men and women)
The leader covers the followers.
He takes responsibility for his followers.
Just like Jesus did.
The husband, as the leader in the marriage relationship covers for the wife.
The man and woman are equal in the marriage, but their responsibilities differ.
The man takes the lead. (Leads from the front)
For the woman to take the lead in a marriage is not the way it is supposed to be.
It is as unsightly as a woman with a buzz cut.
It does not fit, woman are more attractive with the longer hair.
Men, are more suited to the shorter hair.
The husband covers for the wife out of love for the wife.
the husband earns the respect of the woman, the woman knowing she is loved and covered by the husband has the response to respect and follow the man.
Brief and I let a lot of facets out for brevity sake.

I'm not Trinitarian.
However, this scene from the book of Revelation may be relevant.
Revelation 12:7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
Revelation 12:8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
Deuteronomy 10:12 (KJV) And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,
Deuteronomy 10:13 (KJV) To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?

Why would human women wearing head coverings have anything to do with that? What is the connection, what is it about angels that we need to be shielded from as women that we would need a headcovering to begin with?

I believe the idea is that these angels were in rebellion (to God).

Is it because the woman ate from the tree first?

I think the idea is being mindful of the angels, or in remembering the angels, not that a woman needs a head covering because angels rebelled.
It has to do with authority in God's created order.
