Random acts of kindness - May 5th, 2012, 01:58 PM

I have been attending a church for a while with which I have some major theological differences. I attend mostly to enjoy the fellowship of other believers and I do also find the worship meaningful.

This past weekend I attended a men's retreat for the purpose of getting to know some of the other guys better. At one point we were instructed to split up into group of 3 or 4 and go out into the community and preform "random acts of kindness" There were no other instructions we were just told to go do it then to meet for lunch in a little less than two hours. So, my group got in my mini van. Made a couple of calls and were not coming up with any ideas for projects we could do on that short of notice. We sat in the van for a while...boy did I hate this!
...after an uncomfortable silence I suggested that my neighbors yard needed mowing. We drove to her house and knocked on the door but she wasn't home. So we proceeded to get out my mowers and mow as much of her yard in the time we were given. I felt really weird about the whole thing.
We met for lunch and talked about the whole experience. Most of the guys thought it was awesome that we did something to "bless" this elderly woman without even sticking around to let her know who did it.

Two days later I saw that somebody finished the job and really got the place looking good. I am really hoping she didn't think someone was trying to send her a message that her place was an eyesore. I am sort of afraid that there is a good chance that out actions were received as a random act of passive aggression.
I am trying to catch her at home so I can explain but I keep missing her. Either that or she just doesn't come to the door!

My neighbor does this periodically for me. I'll come home from going shopping or something and my lawn is mowed. I don't know about your neighbor, but I really appreciate it when my neighbor does it for me.

We did this alot with the youth ministry I used to help out with.

Often great, but sometimes folks usually took offence (usually when someone assumed something or over stepped the mark)

This scenario is funny, in a sweet kind of way... I have to smile at the though of the menfolk sitting around trying to figure out what to do. Men are so willing to help, but they often rely on the women to make the suggestions.

We had the same sort of fear of offending a widow in our neighborhood - wanting to help, not wanting to offend. It turned out she was very grateful for the help. I'm hoping that it will work out the same for you.

Sure do! I have bad knees and I no longer like climbing down into a car. Plus I have lots of room to haul stuff or people and it gets better millage than a truck. I sort of like PT cruisers too, but I have tended to find better deals on mini vans.

I think it was a nice gesture but you should have told the woman we do this for you in Jesus' name.

Did you miss the part about her not being home.

what about a note on the door with no names on it or perhaps just the name of your Church?

Delmar, my brother. You are a really nice Mormon. Can you come to my house? Kidding kidding kidding, I was just thinking how impressed I was seeing Mormon kids digging with their suits on once. Just leave her a note.

Delmar is a Mormon? Forget the note thing. Jesus is not the spirit brother of Lucifer (Jn 1:1). Get off the lady's lawn. She doesn't need cultists coming to her door (2 Pe 2:1, Ga 5:9).

We help others in Jesus' name (Mk 9:41, Jn 1:1) not sprit brother of Lucifer's name (2 Pe 2:1). That is not a phrase it means we acknowledge his character and attributes (Jn 1:1).

I agree. Sorry, it was an apparently-off attempt at humor.

My apologies to you and Del
