SALVATION BY GRACE ALONE. - May 8th, 2012, 03:34 PM

Salvation is by grace alone through faith least any man should boast.

He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.

Amen

"CANON III (Trent).-If any one saith, that without the prevenient inspiration of the Holy Ghost, and without his help, man can believe, hope, love, or be penitent as he ought, so as that the grace of Justification may be bestowed upon him; let him be anathema. "

Canon XII (Orange). If anyone affirms that we can form any right opinion or make any right choice which relates to the salvation of eternal life, as is expedient for us, or that we can be saved, that is, assent to the preaching of the gospel through our natural powers without the illumination and inspiration of the Holy Spirit, who makes all men gladly assent to and believe in the truth, he is led astray by a heretical spirit, and does not understand the voice of God who says in the Gospel, "For apart from me you can do nothing" (John 15:5), and the word of the Apostle, "Not that we are competent of ourselves to claim anything as coming from us; our competence is from God" (2 Cor. 3:5).

"If a sheerly linguistic version of the gospel could be concocted, it would merely so be no longer the gospel. In the Lutheran Reformation’s understanding, which we believe in this matter to be correct, the sacraments make the inalienable externality of the gospel message and therefore are necessary to the authenticity of that message." (Christian Dogmatics [1984], II:302-303 as cited in Pontifications)

A lot of Catholics weighing in... how about this canon:

CANON 9: "If any one saith, that by faith alone the impious is justified; in such wise as to mean, that nothing else is required to co-operate in order to the obtaining the grace of Justification, and that it is not in any way necessary, that he be prepared and disposed by the movement of his own will; let him be anathema."

or this one:

CANON 12: "If any one shall say that justifying faith is nothing else than confidence in the divine mercy pardoning sins for Christ's sake, or that it is that confidence alone by which we are justified ... let him be accursed"

Indeed Pretty much all mainline denominations have come to the obvious conclusion that various forms of "faith alone" are heretical.

You're being deceitful.

Titus 3:5, as well as Rom 3:20, 24, 28, and Rom 4:3 directly refutes these canons

Is that supposed to form some sort of actual argument? Citing two canons and a bunch of verses and then saying "contradictory"?

I'm simply pointing out the anti-biblical, heretical nature of your organization...

You're posturing, as usual.

You can't go Amen'ing to "grace alone through faith", when your organization has anti-biblical, and "anti-grace alone through faith" canons like this.

you cannot have it both ways

Let me spell it out for you: the canons in no way contradict scripture. Now if you want to make an argument, feel free, I will answer an argument. If you are going to continue posturing, feel free, I will continue to ignore you.
