Soul Sleep -
May 12th, 2012, 12:32 PM
I am not sure on the doctrine of soul sleep that some people promote. It is important to rightly divide the word, and I don't know that I am able to do that myself at this point. But I have found the following verses. Meaning, these verses help me to understand that there will be a resurrection. I believe all people will be resurrected. My understanding is that the position on soul sleep of JWs (Jehovah's Witnesses) is that only some will be resurrected. I am looking for correction on this if my understanding is incorrect.
Daniel 12:2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame [and] everlasting contempt.
Matthew 25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
John 5:28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
John 5:29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
Acts 24:15 And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.
Deuteronomy 10:12 (KJV) And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,
Deuteronomy 10:13 (KJV) To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?

Yes, according to the Bible we all will be resurrected.
Some believe that only saved ones and people who did not have chance to know the Gospel will be resurrected.
It is out of context with love of God. This makes perfect sense to me. This is also SDA's belief.
This is the thing we will never find out until Jesus' judgment day.

Hi , and you will have to engage an Acts 28 , believer , or read Bullinger or Welch as to how they prove it .
We had some Acts 28 people in our assembly , but they have left and never got to question them .
Conventional wisdom , says that the bodies remain in the Grave and the Soul goes to be with the Lord , but questions remain that may be hard FOR the unitiated Dispensational to answer , AS THERE ARE MANY VIEWS .
The best that I have read , in and article in Robert C Brocks journal on Dispensationalism , " is that at death we JUMP TIME " .
Some believe in and iNTERMIATE body and I do not , is the best I can do now .
There is a difference between the Resurrection of the Just and the Unjust the Jesus spoke about , which is THE RESURRECTION after the Great Tribulation .
The Departure/Rapture , Resurrection timeline is different , dan p

I'm having trouble with the grammar of your second sentence. I don't understand what you are saying. It sounds like ideas flowing together. Not sure what ideas though because they are so close together and not distinct.
I'm not sure about what SDA's believe. I know they believe keeping the Sabbath is related to Jesus' return. At least that is my understanding of what they believe.

You are talking about a lot of things and I don't know how to respond.
Why is soul sleep being contrasted with immortal soul?
Deuteronomy 10:12 (KJV) And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,
Deuteronomy 10:13 (KJV) To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?

Some versions of soul sleep have the immortal soul sleeping while in death (SDA), other versions of soul sleep have the mortal soul being destroyed at death (JW) and recreated at the resurrection or the judgment.
Soul sleep is merely an attempt to explain the questions being asked about what happens to a person between death and resurrection.
Does the soul go to heaven or hades while waiting for the judgment?
Does the soul fall into a state of suspension while the person is dead?
Is there any soul after the spirit departs from the flesh?
Will the people God resurrects really be the same people that died, or will they just be replicas?
What is it that makes a person a person, and how is that special thing preserved through death and into the resurrection?

The article is addressing the notions of both soul sleep and annihilationism. The latter denies the immortality of the human soul.

Do you believe there will be a general resurrection in the future?
Deuteronomy 10:12 (KJV) And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,
Deuteronomy 10:13 (KJV) To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?
The doctrine of 'Soul Sleep' says that when a person dies, they no longer have a conscious awareness from that point until the resurrection, whether believer or unbeliever. JW's and SDA believe this.
When I read the scriptures as a whole, comparing scripture with scripture, I get the idea that man is a composite being, made up of and invisible immaterial substance and a visible material substance called body and soul. I also conclude that the believer's soul at death goes to be in the presence of the LORD and that the unbeliver's soul goes to Hades, both awaiting the resurrection of the body.
Our customary language yields intuitive knowledge of mind/body substance dualism when we routinely speak of 'my body/ our bodies', etc.

Soul sleep and annihilationism aside, I don't have a Bible verse to say the soul is immortal.
