What happened to Greece? Isn't Greece the birth place of the "Western World", the ancient and modern Olympics, and philosophy? Didn't 300 Spartans hold off a million man Persian Army for three days? When was the last time Greece actually won a war?

Excellent question. I guess it depends on whether you get to keep them or have to turn them loose after 7 years.

This is why I would never want slaves or indentured servants: ya gotta feed 'em and take care of 'em, and that costs money.

I did the math once, just to see what the economics of servitude-based restitution might be like, and discovered that I'd be better off just writing off the original loss or debt instead of maintaining an indentured servant.

Especially if you have to provide health insurance and tuition for the children.

I mean just basic necessities of food, clothing and shelter. Maintaining children would be unnecessary, as servants can be sterilized, just like livestock.

Regardless of that, in a society where automation is widespread, domestic servants are redundant, and indentured labor is grossly inefficient.

I am waiting for it to be revealed that a certain wealthy politician has hired illegal immigrants to mow the lawn or do other tasks. You just know people are searching the records.

Well, let's see, there's the Greek War of Independence running from 1822-1824 where they defeated the Turks.

They were victorious as a part of the Allies in WWI, though the rest of Allies failed to deliver on their promise of returning Constantinople to the Greece as they divided up the Ottoman Empire.

In WWII, after a period of occupation they forced the Italians and Germans to withdraw with only token assistance from Great Britian.

Then from 1944-1950, they fought an internal civil war where the National Army finally defeated the communists and expelled them from the country.

AFAIK that was that last significant conflict that country participated in.

It's been common knowledge that Romney did since the 2004 primaries and came up again during this years primaries as well.

When an "attitude of entitlement" gels in a society, it is doomed.
The Greek people have rioted repeatedly over austerity cuts even when shown that there are not enough resources to cover their existing costs.
I believe this attitude has become endemic in our country also.

There's a solution to that problem, but I don't think anybody here wants to go there...

That's not exactly what caused the riots.

The first thing that happened was the discovery in 2010 was that the Greek government had been intentionally misreporting the nations financial statistics for over a decade. Because of the financial crisis they could no longer service their debt load and had in seeking more loans it became clear just how badly the government had been lying.

Now imagine your government has been lying to you about the state of your country's economy as well as how much debt the nation has for an extended period of time and is now telling you as a result of that it's going to have to raise your taxes and cut your benefits. In the face of that, I have a really hard time blaming the people of Greece even for the riots directed at their government.
