I am facinated by his motivation also...primarily from a psychological point of view.
From what I've read, he didn't have a history of violence..so I'm thinking not a psychopath...
However, he was highly intelligent, recently colored his hair bright red to imitate the Joker, kept to himself and is still quite young....perhaps late on-set schizophrenia?
[Rusha quote: ...Because there is no justification under the sun for murdering innocent people. The moment society starts questioning why individuals do such things is the moment we open the door to defending their actions.] "So instead you'd prefer to stick your fingers in your ears and go "LALALALALALA! I CAN'T HEAR YOU!..."
Do you agree with these people?:

Why is it the employers responsibility to set their wages based on an employees children?
"A just wage is the legitimate fruit of work. To refuse or withhold it can be a grave injustice. In determining fair pay both the needs and the contributions of each person must be taken into account. "Remuneration for work should guarantee man the opportunity to provide a dignified livelihood for himself and his family on the material, social, cultural and spiritual level, taking into account the role and the productivity of each, the state of the business, and the common good." Agreement between the parties is not sufficient to justify morally the amount to be received in wages" (CCC 2434).

No, I don't agree with the GodHatesFags people. Why on earth would you ask?

Perhaps it has to do with them getting enjoyment out of the death of others via violence.
My enjoyment wasn't in the death of others via violence per se.

I know that ... it's just hard for me to understand how any member of the human race can be so flippant and cruel towards all of these people who are mourning their mothers/fathers/sons/daughters, siblings and friends.
When you evaluate an act, you must view it from the perspective of the agent. An act, to the extent that it's divorced from the agent, simply isn't a human act. An act is only fully determined/understood when you fully understand the intentionality of the agent.

Explain how any enjoyment or amusement would come from such an incident.
Ok. Let's try this again.
The shooting did not occur in just any movie at random. It did not occur in the Spongebob Movie or in the Toy Story movie. It happened at the midnight showing of the Dark Knight, which is a violent action movie. The victims insist that they, at first, thought that the suspect was a movie prop. In light of the nature of the movie (which you won't understand unless you've seen at least one of them), and the various comments made on the news, this leads me to make the joke "Why so serious?"
This amusement was only increased by the fact that I ended up hitting the nail on the head. He was calling himself The Joker.
Finally: the shooting happened in a theater with a no guns policy. This was deeply amusing to me.
Of course, upon later reflection, the first two may not have been amusing as I initially thought. But they were then. The third point still remains amusing to me. And it still remains amusing to me that I totally called it.
But that's just amusement. Now take into account "fascination," and we can start by examining the details of his plot, which was, in my view, positively genius. Evil? Yes. Diabolical? Yes. Wrong? Yes. But genius nonetheless.

I HAVE evaluated the act from the perspective of the agent. His intent was to take out as many innocent people in that theater as he possibly could and have his face plastered all over the news. He wanted to make history.
He is THRILLED to have people like you declaring how brilliant he is and how amusing his attack was ...
Wow ... it just tickles the funny bone, doesn't it, Traditio? Seventy-one people shot and twelve dead! Maybe they will make a sitcom out of this.

You don't know that. Fact is, he's said pretty much nothing about his motives. All we know is that he said that he's the joker and that he demanded a lawyer.
There's a reason why we have trials, Rusha, and it isn't so that we can do the judging before they even start.

He is brilliant. He has an MA in neuroscience. He was in a Ph.D. program. His plot was incredibly intricate and well-thought out. Condemn his actions if you like, and indeed, you should. But you can't deny his brilliance. Could you have formed a plot as well as he did?
