What is the nature of the change of law the writer of Hebrews is discussing?

As for the priesthood being according to the order of Melchisedec, it appears that this is for Jesus Christ only.
Nope again. For Hebrews teaches that Melchizedek was made like unto Christ, having inherited an everlasting priesthood, and therefore became without mother or father, and without beginning nor ending of days. This can't be the levitical priesthood now can it? What priesthood did Jethro hold? Can't be the levitical priesthood can it? He was the high priest of Midian. The reason you don't know these things is because the priesthood has become foreign to the churches since the Catholic church corrupted it, and the bishop of Rome became the Roman pontifex maximus. But the true followers of God have always held his priesthood. May you be willing to pray about it.

The priesthood of Jesus Christ according to the order of Melchisedec is not the Levitical priesthood. I don't understand how you could think I was saying that it was.

No offense Untellectual, but we aren't communicating with the same understanding in mind. I was trying to show that Melchizedek holds this same priesthood as Christ. You said we can't. Hebrews says Melchizedek did.

That Jethro was the high priest of Midian is Biblical. Midian was a son of Abraham through his third wife, Keturah. Jethro used the priesthood to teach many things to Moses. See Exodus. This is the priesthood Moses used to perform the miracles of God.

Don't get all defensive untellectual. I merely bring up the apostles and bishops because they are offices of the Melchizedek priesthood which were lost by the errors of the early church - leading to the dark ages. But they show that Christ passed on offices of the priesthood.

I don't. Google it. It was a doctrine brought in by the Protestants, since they obviously were not going to accept the priesthood of the Catholic church.

Melchizedek was a High Priest. Now Jesus is a High Priest after the order of Melchizedek and not after the order of Aaron and the Levitical priesthood. In terms of being a priest, Melchizedek came first, then Aaron and the Levitical priesthood, then Jesus Christ. Melchizedek did not come after Christ. Melchizedek is not a priest according to the order of Jesus Christ. That kind of idea does not exist in scripture.

Is there anything in the Bible that to you speaks of Jesus Christ and a priesthood established or perpetuated by Him? I don't follow what you are talking about with the Catholic Church. It is not a part of my thinking.

If you don't accept the priesthood of the believer according to Protestant doctrine, then you must do something different with the priesthood of the Israelite and the priesthood Peter spoke of in his epistle.

Perhaps Revelation 1:6 describes the fulfillment of Exodus 19:6? I think it does.
The tribe of Levi was the priesthood in Israel. God would be changing the priesthood if he made all of Israel's citizens priests.
So the change would be from the Levitical priesthood to the new priesthood, in my opinion.
I believe the new priesthood is called the Melchizedek priesthood because Christ is said to be a priest of that order forever (Ps 110:4).

Actually, Adam came first. I know it's not in the Bible, but tough cookies I guess. Chronological order is irrelevant.

It's just a way of speaking. There is no priesthood of Melchizedek. It is the priesthood of God after the order of the Son of God. So yes, Melchisedek is a high priest according to the order of Jesus Christ. Jesus just reestablished the same priesthood.

I realize this, and that is why I brought it up. When I was a Baptist, they taught me nothing of the priesthood - it was completely foreign to me. The Bible doesn't really stress Christ reestablishing the priesthood, but we know He did. 1 Timothy 3 talks of the qualifications of a bishop for instance, including that they should be married. Obviously Catholics changed this too, thus fulfilling Timothy's prophecy that in the latter days some would depart from the truth forbidding to marry. The Bible talks about several apostles being ordained as replacements.

There is no "priesthood of the Israelite." Melchizedek was not an Israelite. Peter is speaking of the Melchizedek or priesthood of God.

I've wondered about the meaning of the phrase translated to "order of Melchizedek."
Melchizedek = King of righteousness
The word translated to order from the Hebrew and Greek (dibrah, taxis) doesn't make me think it is being used like we do when referring to a priest order, e.g. Jesuits.

Maybe it means he is a priest in the manner of the king of righteousness or is a priest in the manner of a righteous king?
Is it a change of priesthood, simply where Christ is our (heavenly) High Priest?
The earthly temple served as a
Hebrews 9:23 Therefore [it was] necessary that the copies of the things in the heavens should be purified with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
Hebrews 9:24 For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, [which are] copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;
Hebrews 9:25 not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another--
Hebrews 9:26 He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.

Hebrews 8:4 For if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law;
Hebrews 8:5 who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, "See [that] you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain."
Hebrews 8:6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.
Hebrews 8:7 For if that first [covenant] had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second.

Exodus 25:40 "And see to it that you make [them] according to the pattern which was shown you on the mountain.
You've been doing a really good job...I only wanted to comment on the questions in yellow (above). To bring it to your attention...that is.
The change of the Law meant an end to all the sacrificial rituals and rites under the Law of Moses. The Lamb of God had arrived. The Priests of Levi were no longer required to perform all those washings and blood sprinklings. We now have a better Priest.

Maybe it's not called the Melchizedek priesthood if it's not speaking about an order or priests as we use the term today.
At this point, I'm not sure what we call the new priesthood. Does it need a name? Isn't Body of Christ a good enough name for the new priesthood since we are made priest in him?
