A Well-Regulate Militia - March 3rd, 2013, 12:43 PM

So supposedly, many TOL members are firm supporters of the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution.

Also supposedly, a sizable portion of the country's population is similarly supportive of said Amendment.

So, where's the militia?

Where are the laws and policies for its regulation?

Why, instead, do we have millions of men and women (many of them violence-prone), who have had ZERO professional training in the handling, maintenance, or proper usage of firearms, running around with an arsenal simply because they can afford it and because they filled out some paperwork?

I'm very much a supporter of the 2nd Amendment, and as such I see the above circumstances as NEGLIGENCE of it, by both the government and the citizenry.

A well-regulated militia, made up of every gunowner in a particular area, trained properly and regularly, would make private gun ownership SAFER, by training citizens (to military specifications) to handle, maintain, and properly use their firearms.

An ACTUAL militia would guarantee that ALL gun owners had been trained not only in the usage and maintenance of their firearms, but would also give them at least SOME of the mental training required to accurately and calmly defend themselves and their families in case of an actual attack.

In summary, if we insist as a nation that we have the right to bear arms, and that that right is protected under the 2nd Amendment, we have a duty to demand that militias be organized so that we (as law-abiding citizens) can know that the shotgun on the mantle or the rifle in the case or the pistol in the purse is not just a desperation weapon, to be wielded in shaking hands which have only ever held it in a shooting range, but one which we have been trained and are qualified to use in self-defense.

Lets see, over the past 10-20 years the news media has shown that the governments first reaction to a civilian militia is to place them under investigation for being potentially subversive, the same way that Homeland Security has placed all military personnel that have experience in combat are to be watched as potential terrorists.

The Government does not want a civilian Militia any more than they want the average American to be armed.

I wonder why there are so afraid of the American people?

Militia aside, look at the 2nd amendment's wording. I've heard it so many times, it doesn't process. So I read it again. The right is not established, it already existed, universally accepted. The 2nd amendment referred to an entity outside the Bill of Rights. Why isn't the language simpler?

And don't current guns laws regulate any would-be militia into microscopic debris?

You have posed the most pertinent questions!
Conversely, I have become extremely fearful of our government.

Many don't form the militia needed to fight back against government, whether it is our own or invaders. Some don't because they don't want to be labeled as domestic terrorists by demoncrats. It is true that a well organized militia (with arms) is much more effective at defending our country than just citizens arming themselves.

You can drop the "supposedly", there are and has been many.

Depends on which organization you are in, Homeland Security, DEA, CIA etc.....from their point of view the militias are subversive organizations that are being investigated and the only thing holding action at bay is a lack of proof for the moment.

Sure and why not, it is their right to make that decision to posses weapons.

We know there are violence prone people in our country but there is still that need to have evidence that they mean to perpetrate the act of violence before taking legal action. Would you want the laws changed?

Professional training... that's like saying you want every one that drives to be required to take a Law Enforcement level driver training prior to receiving a license? We are not trying to make the average citizen into a Seal or Marine are we?

We are not trying to force the development of a militia, that is the choice of each individual but we do have and hope that every one attends a fire arms safety course....?

What other parts of the countries laws do you wish to change, considering you would have to remove a citizens right of choice I know, lets require every one on their 18th birthday to report to military training and serve 2 years to insure they are trained well enough.

No need to insist, it's already there.

A duty to demand that the government follows our Constitution...

If you personally wish a higher level of training there are organizations out there that will give it to you without removing every individuals right of choice, when speaking of Constitutionally protected rights.

Why's the idea of mandatory weapons training so abhorrent to so many gun owners?

I have a pistol and I can't stand to touch the thing! So, for me, mandatory training is something I would do.

Maybe, although I'd be a lot more wary of someone who thinks they know how to use a firearm than an instructor who actually does.

When it comes to devices specifically designed to kill, and kill efficiently, I don't think a little regulation is totally uncalled for. Would mandatory training be a hassle? Sure. Would it inconvenience some folks? Definitely. Would it actually educate certain folks who think they know what's up just by virtue of owning a gun? Absolutely.

? Good question. I have no idea!

To me it would have to do with the amount of training required, today we have many gun safety courses out there and I fully support them.

As for requiring every one to train up to the level of the military in order to own a gun, well, that is just silly.

Perhaps for some it's like High School Gym class all over again.
They're afraid they won't be any good, they'll have the smallest gun in the locker room, the other shooters will make fun of them.
They over look that the whole point is to get better at it.
