Jacob was Initially given the name Israel by God himself in Genesis 32:28 after he struggled with God in a dream. The word Israel
is a combination of two other words;
(misra) and the
(El). El being the common abbreviation of Elohim, which means God. When El is used at the end of a name it means “of God” or “with God”. Take for example all the angel names: Raphael, Gabriel, Michael, Uriel, Azazel.
The word
(misra), comes from the word ham·miś·rāh which means to rule as a government. Isaiah 9:6 uses this word; For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.
Another oft-referenced possibility is the verb
(sarar), which also means to rule, reign or act as prince. The derivative
(sar) means prince, and
(sarah) means princess and is nearly equal to the root of Israel as well as the name of Jacob's grandmother Sarah.
Jacob struggled with God in a dream and overcame, which is quoted as the reason for receiving the name Israel. Although the meaning of the roots don’t seem to suggest a “struggle” which tells us that the point of the dream is not the struggle itself but the result of that struggle which is that Jacob overcame with power and authority. When you put it all together you get a name that means “to rule with authority with God” or “to overcome with power from God”. In other words, “Israel” is the name given to the kingdom of God, or those who rule with God.
