What about alcohol? It's made by fermenting--a natural process.

Both can be used to step toward other fuels that provide the energy density you're looking for, and both could be used in a lab.

There are a few reasons to think it did, but the flood wiped out the evidence, as well as the corporate memory. Just a speculation on my part.
