And? What about charcoal? It's made just from burning wood in a certain way, but it increases the energy value.
What about alcohol? It's made by fermenting--a natural process.
Both can be used to step toward other fuels that provide the energy density you're looking for, and both could be used in a lab.
We have evidence of such use by the early descendants of Cain.

There are a few reasons to think it did, but the flood wiped out the evidence, as well as the corporate memory. Just a speculation on my part.
