just about anything, from either a short-term comic series to a graphic novel, it wouldn't have to necessarily be my idea, just something to get experience

Have you looked into college courses?
Several colleges have a Bachelor of Fine Arts or even a Master of Fine Arts in Comic Art

One of the ones I found with a quick google search said this:

Try the art classes and/r creative writing classes at your local community college.
