Regular soda will make you gain weight when not on a diet, and diet soda will not help you lose weight when not on a diet.
Here's why:
Your body burns a certain amount of calories a day, and any extra calories become fat. If you are eating the same amount of calories, the soda makes you gain. However, if you drink diet soda, you will neither gain nor lose.
I figured I'd bring this up to give some peace of mind to anyone wanting to lose weight but have heard myths and controversies over drinking soda- which brings it to the next thing:
Neither carbonation or artificial sweetener have an impact on your metabolism, though there are certain sweeteners that slightly raise your blood sugar which in turn tweaks your body into wanting to store more calories.
However, those are not found in most, if any, brand sodas.
Basically, one needs to think of soda as a food. That's where much of the confusion comes from.
So drink your Coke Zeros and be happy
