Calvinism teaches that this event precedes believing the gospel, for they say that a dead man cannot believe unto salvation.
Calvinism is confused about what death is. It is not that the man in Adam is inanimate, but separated from God because of sin. He does not have the life of God dwelling in him by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is what gives us life (makes us alive) John 6:63. Men are saved when they receive His life Rom 5:10
Paul makes it absolutely clear that life is given after we believe, not before:
"In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise" Eph 1:13
This alone puts to death the foundation of the false religious system known as Calvinism / Reformed Theology.
