Whenever I've had to interact with the police here in Germany, they always want to know which police do I like better; the USA police or the German ones. They always seem to love hearing about why I like the German police better and they always tell me they don't believe the police in the USA are trained properly. And I have had some interesting conversations about that with them. One seemed to indicate that they they use US police as an example of how not to behave. The German police are so smart and friendly and funny, it's hard not to love them. Everybody loves them! And I love saying good things about them.
And from my experience, I believe they do a good job of catching criminals and protecting the public. I've noticed over the years that they sorta camp-out at night in potential "problem areas" inside the city, in these unmarked utility wagons so they keep an eye out in case something happens I guess. I think that's really cool. And they don't just do it in the inner city either.
There are 2 million plus people in the city I live. Keep in mind,
German cities are darker at night than US ones. We don't have street lights everywhere. Some areas are literally pitch black at night. But you can go anywhere at 2 or 3am and you are not in danger. Old ladies take there dogs out for walks like it's no big deal.
Granted, we seem to have more police here than in the US. But they also don't waste any time harassing people for no reason like the cops in the US do. They don't always waste time arresting people either. If you are acting really stupid they might just punch you in the face or shove you to the ground and scream at you. Then leave you there looking like a moron in front of 100 people.
But if you are a law abiding citizen they wont say 2 words to you! They won't bother you at all! Thankfully the German police have provided countless instructional videos, online free of charge, on the correct way for officers to engage with the public.

(Typical German police officer, engaging with a law abiding citizen. People in other countries love our german police too. No, it's not A.I. This officer was assisting in the Czech Republic with a large scale operation, as indicated by his garb and his EZ III badge.)
