None of this has really classified what you Yanks think a liberal actually is. Apart from they're bad and aren't anarchists...

Liberal: the epitome of evil because ... they don't agree with me.

That is the new generalized, lazy version of the word that is currently being spouted.

LOL !!! America WOULD be much better off if it became more like Europe . We would have far less poverty, unemployment, hopelessness , better medical care , A MUCH LOWER ABORTION RATE THEN WE HAVE NOW , more personal freedom , far less crime, a very low murder rate, better technology, much less religious strife, and just plain more happiness .

so what's stopping you from moving there? :idunno:

More easily said than done .

pretend you're a syrian refugee

i'll bet if we passed the hat here at tol, enough people would chip in for a life jacket and a plane ticket to drop you somewhere in the Mediterranean :)

What a bonkers thread...

Yes, the hate and bias are evident. As is the willful ignorance that protects and fuels it.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to maintain the status quo so long as the status quo is beneficial to the fullness and well-being of the society that maintains it.

Nor is there anything wrong with seeking changes to the status quo that would improve the inclusiveness and well-being of the society in which the change is sought.

And really, these two basic inclinations are all the terms "liberal" and "conservative" are referring to.

But our politicians and our media have decided that it's in their own best interest to use these different natural inclinations within us, and within our society, to divide us against each other, so as to distract us from the real problems of greed and corruption that are tearing our nation and society apart. And unfortunately, we have fallen for their ploy hook, line, and sinker. And the result of our fall can be seen all over these posts, and all over TOL generally. And it is a sad thing to witness.

The democrats are the party of Jim Crow and divide an conquer politics.... the only way this will change is for them to admit their complicity, apologize, disband and create a new political party on a clean platform. Until then, they get what they deserve.

And yet it was Karl Rove who put those flyers on the cars in evangelical church parking lots accusing the democratic candidate of being gay, (a lie) to get his republican candidate (George Bush) elected.

And then continued to use this tactic in every Bush election, thereafter. In the first presidential primary he accused John McCain of cheating on his wife while his wife was in the hospital, and of fathering black babies (in southern states). In the general elections he accuse Al Gore of claiming that he invented the internet (which he never actually claimed) and John Carry of being a phony war hero.

He also claimed that gays were deliberately infiltrating the public schools so as to 'infect' the children with their homosexuality, and their 'gay agenda".

Lies and more lies, all intended to use the voter's bias and ignorance against his political opponents. This is the "genius" of Karl Rove, and the main campaign strategy of the republican party. And now they are trying use voter suppression and gerrymandering to win elections and gain legislative seats.

This is the party you imagine to be so clean and honest, while you blame everything on the democrats.

You are a fool.

right, because politicians have never preyed on voter ignorance before

Mr. Smathers, now 69, was supposed to have dazzled rural voters with a barrage of double talk that went like this: ''Are you aware that Claude Pepper is known all over Washington as a shameless extrovert? Not only that, but this man is reliably reported to practice nepotism with his sister-in-law and he has a sister who was once a thespian in wicked New York. Worst of all, it is an established fact that Mr. Pepper, before his marriage, habitually practiced celibacy.''

Since these words appeared in the April 17, 1950, issue of Time magazine, they have been reprinted in numerous articles.

Liberal, by definition, willing to live without or against traditional values and observations in their politics and/or religion

Conservative, by definition, embraces traditional values as their own in their politics and/or religion
So conservative and liberal meaning changes based on the location / culture / time of the people being discussed? A US conservative might be called a liberal in another country?

Given also that support of taxation and unionism are traditional values nowadays (they've been around and supported for long enough they would qualify, yes?) does that make union supporters conservatives and those on this forum who call unions evil and taxes stealing then liberal? It would be amazing to see their reaction to such a label...

This is getting more confusing. Why can't American conservatives not just use the traditional meaning of liberals based on the political philosophy of liberalism? It's what other countries use and is less dependent on spatial/cultural/temporal context, but then I guess people couldn't all be lumped in the conservative/liberal dichotomy.

This country was not founded on liberalist ideology. That's what the Left tries to dress themselves as but it simply is not true_

And that is what makes me angry about the Left- slave owners gone government..

His servant, Europe is "going to hell in a hand basket ?" Well so is America, but for different reasons. WE are becoming chaotic and lawless . Capitalism has been disastrous for America. In theory it works, but not in practice.
The disastrous supply side economics imposed by the clueless Ronald Reagan h ave destroyed the middle class and created ever expanding poverty, unemployment and helplessness in this country .
We are now an oligarchy , not a democracy or a republic . A tiny handful of superrich people controls the economy and the government , and the vast majority are struggling to stay alive and
make ends meet.
Conservatives accuse liberal democratic politicians of "redistributing wealth ", or intending to .
But the GOP has been redistributing wealth for decades. But as reverse Robin Hoods, stealing from the poor and middle class to make the rich even richer .
Wages have stagnated while the cost of living has risen steadily . There are far too jobs which pay enough to earn a decent or better living. The cost of college education graduate and medical school has become far too expensive, and this is disastrous, because America desperately needs first rate scientists, doctors, engineers, etc. This high cost of higher education is shooting America in the foot .
Our government wastes billion on our boated military budget while our infrastructure is crumbling , and refuses to divert funds for what is really needed . The American dream has become the American nightmare !
