For the Catholics that read the thread...many in the religion of Christianity dunk in a tank claiming they are making an outward expression of their faith. Even though the Bible (through Paul) says you do it with your words.
Let's start at the starting line. The book for the priests, Leviticus.
6 the person who has touched any such thing shall be unclean until evening, and shall not eat the holy offerings unless he washes his body with water. 7 And when the sun goes down he shall be clean; and afterward he may eat the holy offerings, because it is his food. 8 Whatever dies naturally or is torn by beasts he shall not eat, to defile himself with it: I am the Lord.
It is a ceremonial cleansing of sin. This church in the wilderness is to be a nation of priests. In the future. In their kingdom.
6 And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.”
Pay attention to the details from John. Who is doing what. John the Baptist was washing Israelites who didn't touch anything. He was cleansing all. This will be a conglomerate for you. John knows the kingdom is coming, he knows the scriptures. But he only knows what isn't hidden.
5 Then Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him 6 and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.
19 Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?”
15 But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.
He kept the law in our place. And specifically to keep the law of Moses. Even though he was without sin. Knowing washing with water was for Israel who was looking forward, how do you wash sin with water after the cross? That isn't rhetorical. Because you still have sin?
10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
Boast in the cross. Not water baptism.
