Here are some verses about the soul:

Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

1 Thessalonians 5:23
May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Animals have a body and spirit too:

Ecclesiastes 3:21
Who knows if the human spirit rises upward and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?"

Ecclesiastes 12:7
and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

The spirit may be seen as intelligence (IQ):

Job 32:8 But it is the spirit in a person, the breath of the Almighty, that gives them understanding.

The soul seems to be character, personality, temperament, memory but then animals seem to have these qualities too, so they may also have souls?

A soul is a combination of animating spirit and brain.

Souls can be preserved or destroyed.

"And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." (Matthew 10:28)

Hi and in Psa 89:48 speaks about when the SOUL and the BODY are separated , " shall he deliver his SOUL from the hand of the GRAVE ??

Paul is the only that I have read that says in 1 Cor 5:5 " in order that the spirit may be saved in the DAY of the Lord Jesus ."

The Day of the Lord Jesus speaks of the B O C DEPARTURE !!

Hi and I believe that when and un-believer dies , his body goes to Hell and the spirit goes to God that gave that spirit , ECC 12:7 !!

At the time of DEATH Body and Souls are separated as Psa 89:48 !!

In Isa 53:10 Jesus SOUL was made a offering for sin !!

Many say that when we die , believe in ANNIHILATION of the soul !!

Some say that the SOUL IS ASLEEP in the body , as Acts 28 and SDA and JW and many others !!

Some like Swedenborg , believe that man has 2 bodies , one internal and one external !!

We see in 1 Cor 5:5 we the authority of Paul went Paul delivers on ( verse 1 ) to Satan for DEATH of the flesh , in order that the spirit may be saved in the DAY of the Lord Jesus , which points to the departure of the B O C , 1 Thess 4:13-18 !!

Many books have been written about the BODY AND THE SPIRIT AND THE SOUL and I like Eph 2:6 and God has raised us to SIT TOGETHER in the Heavenlies with Christ Jesus !!

(28) Are not able to kill the soul.--Here our Lord uses what we may call the popular dichotomy of man's nature, and the word "soul" includes all that truly lives and thinks and wills in man, and is therefore equivalent to the "soul and spirit" of the more scientific trichotomy of St. Paul's Epistles (1Thessalonians 5:23).
