Bradley D,
The 'punishment' received in this life is only a warning? That might make marriage only a sign. If so then what would it be a sign for?
God has decided to allow marriage to be tested.
There will be people getting married right up until the Great Day of Judgment.
Much can be said about retaining God in our knowledge.
Marriage goes back to Adam and Eve. God intended couples to be a help and an aid to each other (Gen, 2:18). The word "cleave" means to abide and keep close together. It also includes loyalty, devotion, and affection (Gen. 2:24). I believe that is what God intended by Marriage.
Your post contains a lot of wisdom. But the fact is that the marriage between Adam and Eve resulted in great evil. Shall we list the results?
Instead, we should ignore Adam and Eve. Their story is a terrible example. Here is our example
Christ gave His life for the Church. He loves the Church. He is going to make the Church His bride. He will never leave us or forsake us. Once we have become His bride then everything is going to change. We will reign over everything in Heaven and on Earth.
When Jesus and the Apostles preached, polygamy was the norm and marriage was the way a lot of lazy men got rich (off women's dowry's).
Most of the 'biblical' teachings of marriage I see today do not even acknowledge what Jesus was actually responding to and who he was talking to and then proving their case that what Jesus said is still applicable today.
In the end, we can blame the 'religiosity' of marriage to the RCC when it invaded all parts of society and imposed its flawed morals and sacraments on all of Europe.
Also, for a lot of people, divorce seems to be the only unpardonable sin to them in spite of the fact that God knows we are human and forgive us all if we repent.
Anyhow, whatever our government says about marriage should be inconsequential to us, unless it is imposed on us and violates our beliefs.
On a side note, God destroyed Sodom for failing to protect and help the poor in spite of all its riches.... doesn't that sound like America right now?
Self obsession and idle hands are what lead to wickedness.
Our duty in this country is to vote and obey the government according to scripture. If we want the same sex court decision overturned, the only recourse is a constitutional amendment.
As far as divorce, an individual should not ask for a divorce unless it is due to adultery or abandonment. If your spouse wants one and leaves you, you should give it to them. At that point you are free to remarry or do whatever you want.
Marriage is something that should never be a goal as a christian.. it is a secondary state.
Jesus actually taught it is better not be married if one can.
"The disciples said to Him, 'If the relationship of the man with his wife is like this, it is better not to marry.' But He said to them, 'Not all men can accept this statement, but only those to whom it has been given. For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother’s womb; and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men; and there are also eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to accept this, let him accept it.” (Matthew 19:10-12).
The Apostle Paul also believed it was better not to married if one could.
"Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband" (1 Cor. 7:1-2).
No Fault Divorce says that you can put your spouse away for any reason or for no reason at all.
Yes they made it easy so that lawyers would get paid... that doesn't mean you have to take advantage of it.
