A group of atheists who meet regularly under the guise of a church that worships bacon has attracted over 10,000 new members after offering free weddings and baptisms with the promise of marrying couples before something that is "real."

The organization, named the United Church of Bacon, was started in 2010 in Las Vegas by atheist John Whiteside who says he created the group to fight discrimination against atheists.

In just three months' time, the church's membership has shot up by 12,000, thanks to a free wedding offer on its website.

"Bacon lovers — we are truly blessed. The latest billboards for the United Church of Bacon in Las Vegas are advertising the organization's commitment to offering free, legal wedding ceremonies to all couples. Now the church has reported that membership has tripled in the last three months to more than 12,000 new converts," read the organization's website.

One of its latest billboards is geared toward the LGBT community.

"To our LGBT family and friends supporting freedom of expression since inception," read the billboard.

Other artwork released by the United Church of Bacon takes aim at religion, with one more specifically addressing Christianity and Holy Communion. It reads "Saving kids from stale crackers & communion wine since 2010."

The group even issues titles to members including "bacon prophet" and "funkmaster general" and boasts that it "worships bacon because bacon is real."

Members are also adamant about maintaining the separation of church and state in the U.S.

"The skeptics' church has a serious intent, to fight religious discrimination against non-believers, to promote church-state separation, and to demand equal rights for everyone, regardless of faith," read a statement from the United Church of Bacon.

The group has its own rule list on its website, which is laid out on stone tablets in order to mimic the Ten Commandments.

The United Church of Bacon is one of a few quasi-religious organizations that has named itself after a food or drug.

Earlier this year, former music producer Bill Levin helped create the First Church of Cannabis in Indiana, which is a group that practices the consumption of marijuana. Like the United Church of Bacon, the group has also created its very own variant of the Ten Commandments, named the New Deity Dozen.

The First Church of Cannabis also gained its tax-exempt status in May of this year.

Wait, I thought atheism wasn't a religion according to atheists?

When i see people wagging their fingers at God as if to say i dare you, it reminds me of

Ecclesiastes 8:11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

One of the definitions of "religion" is "a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith" (Merriam-Webster). One can said to religious in eating at the same times everyday.

Christianity and bacon-worshiping are conflicting mythologies. The have the same basic structure but each includes a radically different content.

Alcoholics Anonymous demands that its members recognize a "higher power" to help confront one's alcoholism. To those members who beg off, claiming they don't believe in any god at all, they are instructed to "see a doorknob" as one's "higher power."

If they can do that, maybe they all ought to switch to worshiping a sizzling slice of good bacon.

AA makes "no" demands on anyone. All their Steps are suggested. There are atheists in AA. They use the power of the AA group/people aiming for a common goal as their HP.

That wasn't my experience but perhaps I wasn't paying attention and did not interpret the writings and information the same way others did.

Also--but I DID go to many different groups for about three years and they were all the same--but each one slightly different.

I had heard the "doorknob" statement many times. I concluded from hearing it was that atheists are welcome into the group--same as anyone else.

"Hello, I'm aikido7 and I am a lousy communicator."

There are certainly lots of "joke" religions around.

It seems you guys missed out on the flying sphagetti monster. (FSM)

Oh and the Jedi Church.

Then there's the somewhat more direct affront "Raptor Jesus".

Most of us chalk this sort of thing up to "humans being silly" and move on.

I think maybe A4T doesn't get out much. I just can't be insulted by bacon. MMMM bacon. Let's remember, of the big three, only in Christianity is bacon okay to eat!

We should use that as a selling point to Muslims at least. Become a Christian, eat bacon :chew:

What are they up to? Looks to me like they're following the advice of H.L. Mencken, as quoted in my signature.

Actually they're not mocking Christianity, as Jesus rescinded all food laws.

That being said, let's see who they're really mocking and ask this Church of Bacon if it's alright to share their mockery with these people who are well known for their tolerance and kindness.

How dare they use one of my favorite foods to attack religious expression. Now I'm hungry :chew:

It was figurative language anyway. My point was, this isn't remotely the first time this has happened, nor does it do much to mock Christianity compared to anything I gave as an example. Where was the outrage earlier?

But apparently you were insulted enough by my comment to magically make my rep drop by an order of magnitude? With no neg reps . . . I wonder how that happens. Are they invisible now?

Why would i have earlier outrage, when im not outraged now, this was posted to show how idiotic they are. Ive also posted many of the ones you listed in the past too, where were you?

Now you are just lying, i havent negged you nor do i have any power to do anything to your reps. Your reps dropped because knight made them worth less, for everyone today.

Do you often bear false witness on others like that? See this thread : A solution to the rep dispute

Rep power went down to 10 percent of what it was yesterday, yesterday my own rep power was 21 million. Now its 2 million.

Just seemed a bit weak sauce based on your title. It seems several other posters had the same reaction. That and complaining about bacon just seems wrong. Even if it is atheist bacon. :p

I dunno everyone else's looked the same. I didn't say you negged me. I just didn't see posts about changes to the values. For that I apologize.

The title of the thread is the title of the article, one should usually when posting an article, give the credit to the ones who wrote it, which is not me.

Thanks, but its weird to see how ready you are to bear false witness. Id work on that if i were you.

Then they apparently mis-titled it.

It just seemed like an odd coincidence. I went looking first and jumped to conclusions when I didn't find evidence of it. It wasn't intentional.
