Christian Baptism

ordered by Christ:

Mark 16:15-16

He said to them, "Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.

Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Matt 28:19
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit,

prefigured in the OT:

1 Peter 3:20-21 who had once been disobedient while God patiently waited in the days of Noah during the building of the ark, in which a few persons, eight in all, were saved through water.

This prefigured baptism, which saves you now. It is not a removal of dirt from the body but an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

1 Cor 10:1-2 1

I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea,

and all of them were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.

what it does for us:

Acts 2:38

'Peter (said) to them, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the holy Spirit.

Rom 6:3-4

Or are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life.

Col 2:12

In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not administered by hand, by stripping off the carnal body, with the circumcision of Christ.

You were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.

1Pe 3:21

This prefigured baptism, which saves you now. It is not a removal of dirt from the body but an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

Titus 3:5
not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy, he saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the holy Spirit,

Eph 5:26
to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word,

Gal 3:27
For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ

it is by water and Spirit (and sometimes blood):

Matt 3:13-16 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him.

John tried to prevent him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?"

Jesus said to him in reply, "Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed him.

After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened (for him), and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove (and) coming upon him.

John 3:5

Jesus answered, "Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.

1John 5:6-8

This is the one who came through water and blood, Jesus Christ, not by water alone, but by water and blood. The Spirit is the one that testifies, and the Spirit is truth.

So there are three that testify,

the Spirit, the water, and the blood, and the three are of one accord.

There is only one:

Eph 4:5

one Lord, one faith, one baptism;

1Cor 12:13
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.

regardless of who administers it:

1Cor 1:15-16 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?

I give thanks (to God) that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius,

there are many examples: Paul Acts 9:18 22:16 Samaria and the Eunich acts 8 Cornelius Acts 10 lydia and the jailer acts 16 crispus acts 18 ephesus acts 19...

Peace!

John foretold a baptism not of human hands.. but one of fire and the Holy Spirit...that time is NOW!

If not NOW.. then when?

The sad part is, you might take the baptism of fire (great tribulation) because you refuse reconciliation.

Nope... if you have the spirit and go through that fire of transformation, what good is a temporary non-trans-formative religious ritual good for?

My view is people that believe that obedience to something done by human hands will somehow get them access to something God has not personally given to them. Which is why water baptism is such a dividing issue and cancer in the christian community... it gives people a sense of entitlement because the think the obeyed... then they think they have to be water baptized a certain way for it to be 'legal' to the point of making people get baptized again if they want to join their church.

And the sad part is that people don't see how utterly evil and anti-christ this type of behavior is.

Yep. Baptism of fire is a bad thing. He will burn them through. He will purge them of their evil. You will be a part of it because you reject reconciliation.

Water baptism has nothing to do with reconciliation. It's just a rite of passage that certain groups have grabbed onto in order to restrict their membership and then make their members stay in line.

God is going to chose who he wants and baptize them by fire and the holy spirit as a sign. Water baptism is for those that are confused and easily led by fraudulent leadership.

Water baptism has nothing to do with reconciliation.

Who said it did? So why are you misdirecting away from baptism of fire that you brought up?

It's just a rite of passage that certain groups have grabbed onto in order to restrict their membership and then make their members stay in line.

At the time it was a ritual cleaning for the priesthood.

God is going to chose who he wants and baptize them by fire and the holy spirit as a sign.

Baptism of fire and of the Holy Spirit are two different things. They are going to immersed in fire (tribulation). They will have the baptism of the Holy Spirit, which is power, to help them endure to the end. None of this applies to the Body of Christ of which you have stated emphatically you do not belong.

Whichever style or mode of water baptism you personally subscribe to...if a professing believer refuses it as unnecessary, is God displeased?

If the 3000 on the day of Pentecost had refused water baptism then they would not have received the Holy Spirit---

Act 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Act 2:39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
Act 2:40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
Act 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
Act 2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Act 2:43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.

Baptism in the early Church:

And concerning baptism, baptize this way: After reviewing all of this teaching, baptize in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, in living (running) water. But if living water is not available, then baptize into other water; and cold is prefered, but if not available in warm. But if neither is available, pour water three times upon the head in the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. But before the baptism, let the overseer fast, and also the one being baptized, and all others who are able; Be sure to instruct the one being baptized to fast one or two days before. Didache 7

Next what saith He? And there was a river streaming from the right
hand, and beautiful trees rose up from it; and whosoever shall eat
of them shall live forever.
This He saith, because we go down into the water laden with sins and
filth, and rise up from it bearing fruit in the heart, resting our
fear and hope on Jesus in the spirit. And whosoever shall eat of
these shall live forever; He meaneth this; whosoever, saith He,
shall hear these things spoken and shall believe, shall live forever.

Barnabas 11:10-11

I will also relate the manner in which we dedicated ourselves to God when we had been made new through Christ; lest, if we omit this, we seem to be unfair in the explanation we are making. As many as are persuaded and believe that what we teach and say is true, and undertake to be able to live accordingly, are instructed to pray and to entreat God with fasting, for the remission of their sins that are past, we praying and fasting with them. Then they are brought by us where there is water, and are regenerated in the same manner in which we were ourselves regenerated. For, in the name of God, the Father and Lord of the universe, and of our Saviour Jesus Christ, and of the Holy Spirit, they then receive the washing with water

Justin Martyr (first apology 61)

Moreover, the things proceeding from the waters were blessed by God, that this also might be a sign of men's being destined to receive repentance and remission of sins, through the water and laver of regeneration,--as many as come to the truth, and are born again, and receive blessing from God

Theophilus of Antioch (2,16)
